The North Miami Swim team
has provided a variety of aquatic activities for North Dade county
for more than 30 years. The swimmers and athletes come from a
wide range of backgrounds and areas and represent a tremendous
range of skills and abilities.
Our program begins with our
Learn to Swim Program. In this program we
introduce swimmers to water safety in ‘a learn to swim’
environment. This last year we taught more than 200 students to
swim in our Learn to Swim Program. Most of the swimmers were in the
age range of three to ten.
For individuals that have
mastered the skills covered in the pre-team program we have our
‘Fish’ group. It is at this level that
we begin to teach the four competitive strokes and introduce the
participants to competition. We have organized a league of several
pools that run what we like to call "Fun Meets" where everyone wins
a ribbon every swim. We emphasize sportsmanship and personal
improvement. Often the team will have an ice-cream party for all
the swimmers who improved their times. We hope to introduce
competition where trying to win is important but
Doing your best is what is rewarded the
most.
From Fish the swimmers can
then move onto a series of groups each one requiring more work and
commitment and hopefully greater rewards. At the top side of our
program we have been very fortunate to have a long list of
successful swimmers. Many compete for their local high schools and
some have even won state titles ( This year many swimmers competing
at the high school level qualified for an FHSAA State swim meet
which takes only the fastest swimmers in each event from an
entire district.) Many have gone to collage on scholarships. It is
very pleasing to see the number of swimmers who have found
employment using the skills developed during our time together as
either lifeguards, coaches, aquatic instructors or other occupation
benefiting from the discipline of swimming.
Our team travels throughout
the state and Nation representing our community at meets like Fla.
Sunshine State game, where we had three high point winners,
Sectionals and Senior Nationals which deal with the top 3% of the
swimmers in the entire nation.
It
stays very important to us not to exclude any swimmer based on
ability.
We also try
to maintain an active masters program for those adults who wish to
either continue competition or just wish to stay fit or get back in
shape.
