Bob Gillett
Head Coach
BOB Gillett, formerly of Arizona Desert Fox
(AFOX), founded AFOX in 1972 and coached the team for the past 25
years at the Arizona Sports Ranch in Phoenix, Ariz.
Over the years, AFOX produced many great swimmers. The most notable
came with Misty Hyman, who won 11 National Championships in the 100
and 200 butterfly. Hyman swam one of the greatest American Olympic
efforts in history when she upset Susie O’Neil of Australia
to become the 2000 Olympic Champion in the 200 fly.
Gillett was the founding President of NCSA (National Club Swimming
Association) in 2001. The organization led the effort to bring back
the Junior National Championships in this country. After USA
Swimming dropped Junior Nationals in 1999, many of the club coaches
felt that they had lost a major part of their system to develop
elite 18-and-under swimmers. NCSA sponsored Junior National
Championships from 2002-06. USA Swimming has now taken back over
the Summer Junior Nationals, but NCSA still sponsors a much needed
Spring NCSA Junior National Championships. As the former President,
Gillett is still a member of the Board of Directors of the NCSA.
