Jose Bonpua joined
LAMVAC in 1998 to coach the Advanced Age Group and Senior swimmers
at Foothill pool. He was promoted to Head Coach in 2000. Jose began
swimming competitively in 1978 for the YMCA in Cebu, Philippines.
Wanting to share his love of swimming, Jose became an instructor
for the Northeast YMCA in 1985. From 1986 through 1989, he
coached age-group swimmers for Tiger Aquatics and served as head
coach for the Blue Dolphin Swim Club, a summer league team.
Jose continued to work for Tiger Aquatics, serving as their
assistant head coach for two years, working with the senior
swimmers and assuming primary responsibility for the 13- to
16-year-old age group. Jose has introduced a Masters swim program
at Foothill pool, and is, himself, active as a Masters
Ed Toatley joined LAMVAC in 2010 to become the Senior Coach for the Piranha and Tiger Shark (ages 5 through 14) age group swimmers. Ed graduated in 1974 from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in political science and a minor in math and athletic coaching (emphasis in swimming, water polo, volleyball and tennis). He came to LAMVAC as a swim coach with nearly 40 years of experience. He was the senior coach for the Daly City Dolphins from 2005 to 2009 and head coach of the Morgan Hill Swim Club from 2002 to 2005. He has also been employed as a head, interim and assistant coach in clubs in New Mexico, Missouri, Illinois, Colorado and Nebraska. Since 1973, Ed has coached 134 US Swimming Age Group National Top 16 Swimmers. He has also coached 58 National (Junior and Senior) Qualifiers.
Masters, Piranha and Tadpole Coach
Carolyn Ho joined LAMVAC as a coach in 2013. She completed her Red Cross certification to be a Water Safety Instructor in the spring of the same year. Starting as a Piranha in 2006, Carolyn swam with LAMVAC until graduating high school in 2013. She is a student at Foothill College; her dream job is to become an art teacher. Her favorite events are the 200-meter and the 500-yard freestyle.
Masters and Tadpole Coach
Anna Lee coaches Tadpoles at Foothill Pool and assists with the Masters in the mornings. Anna swam with LAMVAC through her high school years. Recently graduated from UC-Santa Barbara with a major in history, Anna is continuing her studies in education at Santa Clara University. Her favorite events are the 500- and the 1650-yard freestyle.
Piranha and Tadpole Coach
Natalie Thiel joined LAMVAC in 2016 to coach the Beginning Tadpoles, Advanced Tadpoles and Beginning Piranhas. Natalie swam for DACA and Quicksilver at an early age and throughout high school. She now swims competitively for Foothill College, where she studies biological sciences. She is a seven-time CCCAA All-American. Her favorite events are the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke.
Mountain View resident Cameron Hayes has loved being in pools since he was young. But he began swimming seriously when he started playing Water Polo in his sophomore year of high school. Cameron coaches Beginning and Advanced Tadpoles. He studies mechanical engineering at Foothill College and plans to transfer to a four-year university. His goals are to obtain a degree, travel the world and give back to his community.
Laura Lee is returning as a Tadpole Coach during our busy summer months. Laura is a long-time LAMVAC swimmer. She started with us as a Tadpole at age 9, and advanced to Junior level in high school. During the school year, she is a student at Knox College, where she is studying creative writing. Her favorite events are the 500 and the 1650 yard freestyle.
Assistant Tadpole Coach
Eddie Barnes started with LAMVAC as a Tadpole in 2003. An accomplished vocalist as well as swimmer, he has livened up our swim meets with his rendition of the national anthem. His favorite events are the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke. In between school terms, Eddie helps with the Tadpole group.
Jonathan Lo is a substitute coach. Jonathan coached for LAMVAC in 2009 and 2010 and then returned in 2013 to assist the senior coach with the Piranha group and work with the Advanced Tadpoles. Jonathan started with LAMVAC as a Piranha at age 8 and swam through his senior year in high school. He studied engineering at San Jose State University and went to work for Google after graduation. His favorite events are the 100- and the 200-meter breaststroke.
Tiger Shark, Piranha Coach
Marisa Mulkey grew up in Mountain View and swam with LAMVAC from
the time she was 5 until she was in her young teens. She graduated
from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California, with a
bachelor’s degree in kinesiology (emphasis: health and human
performance) and education. From a young age, Marisa has had an
interest in living a healthy and active lifestyle. She swam and
played water polo competitively throughout high school and swam for
one year in college. For the past five years, she has coached young
swimmers in swim programs around the Bay Area. Marisa enjoys
swimming, surfing, hiking, playing tennis, reading and being in the
