Head Coach

Joel
began swimming during his sophomore year when a girlfriend dared
him to try out for high school swim team. He made the team,
and was hooked. He pursued club swimming when he realized that
high school training wasn’t adequate for where he wanted to
be. He has swum at the high school, club, collegiate and
Masters levels, then went on to duplicate that with his coaching
career.
He
coached the Moreno Valley Aquatic club, then Riverside Aquatics
(RAA), one of the more established clubs in the Orange section of
the Southern California Swimming LSC. While there, Joel
worked closely with area high school coaches to produce quality
swimmers, believing that he and the HS coach both sought the same
goal.
Joel
plans to have a strong team of swimmers at every level, and will
rely on Hunter and Casey to produce quality
swimmers. He has strong expectations, but recognizes that
there are different coaching techniques that could be employed to
relate to each swimmer.
Joel wants all of
the swimmers to know him and to see him on deck several times a
week. He prefers to evaluate each swimmer’s performance
with the other coaches during swim meets, and believes that
swimmers should be honored when they make the higher
cuts.

Casey Murphy has been a coach of WWA for seven
years and a certified USA coach for nine years. Her coaching career
started in Arizona after she finished swimming for Arizona State
University where she earned All-American swimming honors at the
NCAA championships.
While coaching in Arizona and in Seattle, she has had the
opportunity to work with athletes of all levels and abilities. Many
have reached up to the Age group sectional level and are amongst
the best in the Pacific Northwest. Besides writing workouts and
helping swimmers prepare themselves to be the best they can be, she
believes it is very important to teach her swimmers the true life
long values of swimming. She wants her swimmers to understand how
to set goals and take ownership of their swimming.
During the day Casey works at Hilltop Elementary as an assistant
principal. She has been involved in teaching for the last
eight years with the Highline School District. Casey
continues to enjoy swimming as well spending time with her
family.

Hunter McAllister
Age Group Coach

A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Hunter swam competitively for
more than 15 years. Hunter attended and swam for the UW
(go Dawgs!) and lettered all four years, in
addition to being voted captain during his senior year. WWA is
his second coaching position; he served as assistant coach for five
years of high school swimming at Fairbanks’ Lathrop High
School (go Malemutes!).
Hunter’s
philosophy is that “all training has a purpose and there is
no one right way to teach. One has to be committed to the sport,
wanting to be better as a swimmer and young person. Swimming is a
microcosm of life, and lessons can be learned in a safe
environment.” His basic training approach is Individual
Medley-based. Hunter believes that balance is key in developing the
techniques necessary to compete at each stroke, and that
“This is also good from a mental aspect as one stroke only
can be a bit boring”.
When not at the
pool, Hunter works for a yacht maintenance company working
primarily on brightwork and running waxing
crews.

Swimming has been a lifetime passion of
mine.
I began my swimming career at 4-years-old as a Speedy Sixer at
Normandy Park Swim Club. I continued to swim at Normandy Park until
I graduated from High School. In addition to swimming at Normandy
Park I also did some club swimming and swam for Highline High
School through high school. In addition to my love of swimming, I
also love teaching. When I was 12-years-old I began teaching swim
lessons at Normandy Park pool where I continued to instruct for the
next ten years. I then went on to coach Speedy Sixers for 2 years
which led into two years of being an assistant coach at Normandy
Park. Last summer I was a head coach at Olympic View Swim Club. I
am currently an elementary school teacher in the Highline School
District and I am excited to begin my coaching career at Whitewater
Aquatics.
