Fred Wales - Retired Head Coach email
Coach Fred
Wales took over the team
in August of 1978 after ten years of teaching swimming and coaching
at James Denman Junior High. In 1977 he became head coach at Balboa
High School in San Francisco where he took the last place
Buccaneers to a third place finish, led the team to an 11-1 record
in 1978, and challenged his alma mater Lowell for the AAA City
Championship. When he joined the DCD staff as head coach he began
his drive to bring the local recreation team to prominence in the
world of age group swimming. By 1981 they had won team
trophies in open competition from Reno, Monterey, Vallejo, Benicia,
Indian Valley, to the Punahou Invitational in Honolulu,
Hawaii. They returned to Hawaii in 1985 and won the Kamehameha
Meet, with 3 swimmers pictured in the Honolulu Star as
high point winners. In his 30 years with the Dolphins he
has produced age group and high school champions who have broken
team, high school, Pacific Swimming, and United States Swimming
National records. DCD has placed swimmers on Zone 1-North and
Pacific Swimming All-Star teams since 1979.
He has coached High School and NCAA division 1
All-Americans as well as Olympic Trials participants. His swimmers
have gone on to win coaching honors from CCS Honor Coach
to NCAA Division 1 ’Coach of the Year’.For his many
contributions to the Daly City community, he was inducted into the
Daly City Sports Hall of Fame in April of 2008. He still resides in
Daly City with his wife Christine.

Mario
Orsorio has been working with the
Daly City Dolphins since 2000. He was formerly employed
by the
Daly City
Parks
and Recreation Department where he managed
the Aquatics program. Mario graduated from Westmoor
High where he swam for Westmoor team. While swimming for Westmoor
he qualified for CCS and held the 100 yard butterfly record.
That record has since been broken by a DCD swimmer who Mario
trained.
Many of his DCD swimmers achieved PRT times,qualify for the Western
All-Star meets, and continue to do so as they move on to other
age groups. He has also coached several swimmers who have won
High Point
trophies and who have placed in several events in the Age Group
Championships, JO's as well as Far Westerns. He looks forward to
continuing to develop the talent of many more young swimmers. His
main priority is to instill a life long love for swimming and
the hard work necessary to achieve their goals.

A. J.
Vergarahas had a long connection
with the Daly City Dolphins, where he was a team member for eight
years. He also swam at
Junipero
Serra
High School
in
San Mateo
, where his favorite events were the 200 Individual Medley, 100
butterfly, and 100 backstroke.
He has been a pre-competition instructor for nine years as well as
an age group coach for three years. Since 2003 he hs been head
coach of
Westmoor
High School
’s Swim Team. He feels that his work with DCD provides an
important service to the diverse children of our community.

Mark Phee, a Daly City resident is one of the newest
additions to the Daly City Dolphins coaching staff. He has been a
part of the swimming scene since the age of fifteen. Like Mario and
Janice, Mark had been a part of the Daly City Paks and Recreation
Department as a lifeguard and swim instructor for four years.
He was also a member of Westmoor High Schools swim team.
After graduating from Westmoor, he returned the following swim
season to work with the Junior Varsity swim team as an assistant
coach. Mark works along with Janessa for the bronze
group and wants to continue giving back to his community.

Janessa Rozal has been a part of the Daly City Dolphins since
the age of seven when she first joined the team’s summer
pre-comp program. In addition to swimming competitively with
DCD, she was a member of the Varsity swim team during her four
years at Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep; serving as the team captain
her senior year. In high school she was the team’s
leading breastroker, qualifying in CCS for the 100 breastroke and
team relays. Giving back to where it all started, Janessa has
been a pre-comp instructor since 2004
and is one of the newest additions to the DCD coaching staff.
As a coach, she hopes to inspire her swimmers to do their best and
have fun while swimming.
