Coach Pre Senior, Athens NS Nat
Coach Shaun Anderson started swimming at the age of 5.
During his grade school and high school years in Utah, he held
multiple records in both Butterfly and Backstroke. He was awarded a
two year scholarship for swimming, and chose to swim for BYU for
almost a year under the training of Coach Tim Powers.
Aside from coaching AAAA, Coach Anderson is also the head coach
for the Braun Oaks Dolphins. He still loves to swim and competes as
a Masters swimmer, when he’s not coaching.
Coach Anderson is an Air Force Veteran, husband of more than 10
years to his wife, and a father of 4. Of his children, 2 have
already decided to follow in his footsteps and become swimmers.

Block literally grew up at the George Block Aquatics
Center and has been around swimming his entire life. He split his
younger athletic endeavors between swimming, basketball, and
soccer; finally committing to year-round swimming in middle
Coach Block attended Holmes High
School where he swam and played water polo for four years,
eventually earning an all-district water polo award and the school
records in the 100 and 200 backstroke as well as part of the 200
freestyle relay. After graduating from Holmes high school, Coach
Block attended the University of Redlands where he swam for four
years and was part of seven consecutive SCIAC conference titles won
by the Redlands men's swimming and diving
After graduating from Redlands
with a major in history and a minor in anthropology, Coach Block
immediately returned to San Antonio with the goal of returning to
his home pool to turn what was then a very novice coaching hobby
into a career. Coach Block is currently attending UTSA in
search of a masters degree in archaeology and
an elementary school teaching credential.

Coach Ana Carey is a native of El Paso,
Texas. She started
swimming there at age 5 and continued through high school with
legendary El Paso coach, Leo Cancellare, and later at North Texas
Coach Carey is a Registered Dietician and currently
consults at St. Mary’s University. She has three children that
participate on the team at the NISD Natatorium, Justin, Claudia and

Coach Laura Cox works for the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical
Research here in San Antonio. She is an Associate Scientist in the Department of
Genetics and a Core Scientist in the Southwest National Primate
From 1977-1985, she was the first woman to work
as a lifeguard at Huntington State Beach. From 1984-1985, she was
the Assistant Swimming and Water Polo Coach at Washington and Lee
University in Lexington, VA. She was also the Head Swimming
Coach for the Rockbridge Aquatics Team in Lexington as well.
From 1985 until today, she has held numerous coaching positions
with Alamo Area Aquatics Association (Northside Aquatics): Novice
Coach, 1985-1987; Senior Coach, 1987-1988; Age Group Coach,
1988-1989, Head Age Group coach, 1989-1990; Head Novice Coach,
1991-1993; Head 8 & Under Coach, 1993-1998; Head Novice and 8
& under Coach, 1999; Head Coach 10 & unders, 2000 -
Since 1998, she has held a chair on the American
Swimming Coaches Association Anti-Doping Advisory

books:Fundamentals of Competitive Swimming for 8 &
Unders: Based on Breath Control, Balance, Sculling and Rhythm;
Fundamental of Competitive Swimming for 8 & Unders, The Video;
and Dryland for Age Group Swimmers.

Nyssa Counts is a Kurt Swanson protégé,
swimming under his tutelage throughout her high school
career. During that same time, she swam for Holmes as a
consistent Regional competitor.
began her coaching career as a Summer League assistant coach for
Gabriel Best at Northchase and is currently an Instructional
Assistant with the Northside ISD as well as Head Coach for the
Woods of Shavano Summer League Team.

Coach Peter Hay
both swam and played water polo through high school and college at
the University of Missouri. As the Head Coach of the Seahawks
Swim Team (Belleville, IL), Coach Hay became part of the Northside
family, by being the age group coach of Kathy Barris
(Marshall/Texas A&M), one of Northside’s most decorated

Coach Hay went to Metro Omaha, where he was named Midwestern Age
Group Coach of the Year. Stops with the Clemson (University
club team) Aquatic Team and the Valdez (Alaska) Torpedoes brought
him to Texas and the Rockwall YMCA. At Rockwall, he qualified
three swimmers to the YMCA Nationals.
At every stop, Coach
Hay improved his teams both in size and quality, and developed
swimmers to the national level.

Head Coach, High Performance
Coach Derek Howorthjoined NISD Aquatics in the
fall of 2006 as the Head Coach of the George Block Aquatics Center.
He grew up in San Antonio where he swam with AAAA and Jay High
School. While at Jay he was a UIL State medalist in what many say
was the greatest race in the history of Texas High School Swimming
(1992 Boys' 200IM), a many time All-American and current record
holder at Jay.
Coach Howorth continued his swimming career at the University of
Texas where he was a 6-time All-American, US Olympic Trials
Qualifier, and a member of the UT National Championship Team in
1996. While at Texas he earned his degree in Applied Learning and
After college, Derek began coaching as the Head Coach of the
Florida Aquatic Swim Club (the club team for the University of
Florida). From there he moved to the Highlander Aquatic Club in
Orlando, before returning home to Texas as the Associate Head Coach
of the famed Cy-Fair Swim Club (a.k.a. The Fleet).
During his time coaching Derek has developed over 20, National
Top 16 swimmers, served the Texas Age Group Swimming Committee
(Chair), All-Star Committee (Chair), been named Gulf Swimming Age
Group Coach of the Year in 2005 & 2006, and named TSA and ASCA
Age Group Coach of the Year in 2006. Coach Howorth has
also had the opportunity to share his swimming and coaching
experiences in Kenya (2010), Dubai (2012) and The ASCA World Clinic
Coach Howorth enjoys coaching because it allows him to help kids
learn life lessons through the sport of swimming.
During his free time Derek enjoys traveling, cooking, cycling,
being outdoors (when it’s not too hot) and spending time with
his wife, Angela, whom he married in October of 2009.

Tanya Nicole Lane
Coach London, NS Nat
Lane joined the Northside staff in the summer of 2011. She
grew up in San Antonio where she swam with AAAA and still holds
records in the 10 & under and 11&12 age groups. She is very
proud to currently share the AAAA record board with her son,
Hunter, who swims at Northside. Her high school swimming years were
spent in Florida where she was a member of the 1986 U.S. World
Championship Team and earned a 9thplace world ranking in
the 400 IM. She competed in the 1988 Olympic Trials, finishing
5thand 7thin the 200 IM and 400 IM,
Coach Lane continued her
swimming career at the University of Notre Dame as an All-American
and competed in the 1993 Olympic Trials. Many years later, she took
up Master’s Swimming and has won National’s in several
events. Both Coach Lane and her husband, Will, swim Masters at the
Northside pool and have 3 boys, Hunter, Austin and Sean, whom all
participate at Northside Aquatics.
She is excited to be
coaching swimming and be able to give back to a sport that has
meant so much to her over the years.

Swam for the City of Midland Aquatics club from the age of 9
years old and continued swimming competitively for the next 9 years
all the way through high school. Upon completing her B.A. in
Psychology from the University of Texas at San Antonio she decide
to return to her passion for swimming as a coach at NISD Aquatics.
Kristina's swim career includes being coached by highly known and
decorated Coach Ted Carson who is now coaching for City of Plano
Swimmers. As well as, spending a few summers at Arizona Sports
Ranch Swim Camp being coached by Olympic swim coach Bob
Kristina's passion for swimming is evident through her
commitment to her young swimmers and through her philosophy that
swimming is not just an activity but a way of life.
Kristina is American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 2
certified and currently working on her ASCA Level 3 certification.
Her future plans also included returning to the University of Texas
at San Antonio to earn a B.S. degree in Kinesiology and a UTSA

Coach Megan Perez joined the coaching
staff at the George Block Aquatics Club in the fall of 2008. She
graduated from Warren High School where she swam and played water
polo. She grew up swimming for AAAA and swam for Coach Howorth
during her high school career.
After graduating from high school, Megan earned her a Bachelors
of Art in Mathematics with Teaching Certifications form St.
Mary’s University. She is currently Teaching Mathematics at
John Jay High School.
Coach Megan is coaching the 10 and under A and B at the
George Block Aquatics Center. She enjoys seeing the swimmers
excited when they swim personal best times and accomplish their
goals. She hopes to teach her athletes many life lessons through
the sport of swimming.

Rodriguez grew up at Medina Lake and started his life in the
water skiing, knee boarding, and bare footing around the age of
five. Later on as he grew to be braver in the water he enjoyed
cliff jumping and scuba diving where he took the opportunity to
scuba dive inside Jacob’s Well.
attended John Jay High School where he joined the swim team and
swam competitively for his first and only season. He absolutely
enjoyed the physical and mental challenges of the sport. He still
loves to be athletic and enjoys playing many other sports when he
has the chance.
Coach Drew started coaching at the George Block Aquatic
Center in 2002.

Salazar started swimming when he
was young and swam for the Great Northwest Gator's
Swim Team. Coach
Kurt Swanson was one of his coaches. He continued
swimming at Taft High School and played Water
Polo. He has been coaching with Swim America
for three years now, and has also been a
Life Guard since high school.

Bill c Thomas
Bill Thomas coached at Northside from 1987-1998 and rejoined
the district in 2001 to coach at O’Connor High School. During his coaching career
he was a part of a Junior National Team Championship, coached
numerous Junior National Champions, UIL Champions, USA National
Team Members, Olympic Trials qualifiers, a World Championship gold
medalist and over 100 high school and collegiate
lifetime member of the American Swimming Coaches Association and
Instructor of the ASCA Stroke School, Coach Thomas has been
nationally recognized with a Counsilman Creative Coaching Award for
developing the “Backstroke Canopy” seen at the George
Block Aquatics Center.
He has also written and published numerous articles in the areas of
Coaching and Leadership.
Thomas is a native of Oregon where he was a high school state
champion, collegiate All-American and National Championship
competitor in the freestyle. He also played collegiate water
polo and holds a Master of Science degree from Southern Oregon
Certification - Level 4

My name is Kelly Torres. I am a teacher in the
Northside School District. I am from Fairbanks, Alaska where I
started swimming from the age of 5. I attended the University of
Washington for my undergraduate and graduate schooling, having swum
all 4 years for the Huskies. I specialized in the 100 and 200
Breaststroke. I have coached in Washington State and Alaska. I
moved to Texas with my husband 7 years ago and we now have 2

Coach Lorna Walters recently returned to coach at
Northside where she started her coaching
2002 Coach Walters began as a Swim America Instructor. In the fall of the same year she
was hired by Laura Cox as the Girls Age Group
the summer of 2004 Coach Walters moved to Marina, California where
she was the Head Age Group Coach and Swim Lessons Coordinator for
the Seaside Dolphins, under head coach Ken Fittro. In 2006 Coach Fittro added high
coaching to Coach Walters’ assignment as the Seaside High
School Junior Varsity Coach.
December 2006 Coach Walters became the Head Age Group Coach for Sea
Devils Swimming under Coach Victor Abrahaminian in Burke,
Coach Walters returned to Northside as the Senior
Assistant Coach in 2008.
She is now the coach for the Senior Development
