Head Coach Lee
Hutchens has been involved in swimming for 25 years as
both a swimmer and coach. Lee grew up in Northern Virginia,
swimming competitively for QDD and Solotar. Collegiately, he
swam for East Carolina University for four years, and was
selected as Team Captain. Lee achieved Junior National
time standards, State Championships, and was a Top 10 swimmer
for ECU.
Lee has served in various coaching positions for USA Swimming
clubs in North Carolina and Virginia, and was elected as
a Zone Coach for North Carolina three times, and
Virginia one time.
Lee believes that training the swimmers to use their mind is just
as important, if not more important than just training the body.
The swimmers need to understand what they are doing, why they are
doing it, and why it is important. One of his main training
points is to teach the kids how to become their own personnel coach
because they are the ones doing the work and they have to
understand what their body is telling them and how to respond to
it.
Lee is married to Megan Hutchens, a former UNC Swimmer and
teacher. They are planning to start a family here in
Columbia
