Some General Information you will find useful regarding tryouts:

All tryouts are done at:

Sachs Recreation Center

455 Lake Cook Road

Deerfield, IL 60015

You must complete a tryout to join the team.  At the tryout there are two key skills you must demonstrate for 20 yards each to qualify for the entry level group Stroke School:

  • Front crawl with breathing to the side, and then face in the water when not breathing.
  • Front Crawl Face DownFront crawl breath to side
  • Back crawl with body straight at the surface.
  • Backstroke at the surface
  • Group placement is based on two criteria:
    • Ability
      • How well you swim and what you know about competitive swimming
    • Age
      • Are you 10 and under? Or are you 11-13, or are you in high school?

  • Practice is flexible. You can come as often or as little as possible. As you progress through groups you'll be asked and encouraged to come more often as swimming becomes your "sport." For beginners, we ask that you come to practice 2 times a week.
  • Swim meets are optional. We restrict beginners to "developmental" meets or meets that are appropriate for beginners to ease them into competition. As you progress through the groups, meet participation will become more encouraged and you will have more options.  Generally, we offer about 1-2 meets each month and you can go to as many or as few as you wish.
  • Practice Times: Practice is determined by the group. You can attend as many times a week as you want to your group's practices. Generally, they are at the same time, but sometimes they vary. You will need to check the Coho Practice Schedule Here, to stay up to date.

Spring 2017 practice times for beginner groups:

  • Stroke School practices at SRC from 5:45pm - 6:15pm either Mondays and Wednesdays, or on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

    • Come early, as we'll do activities on deck for about 15 minutes before getting in the water.

  • Minnows practice at SRC from 6:30pm - 7:15pm with practices available Monday - Thursday.

The minimum skill requirements for Coho are: Individuals ages 5 and over must be able to swim 1 length of freestyle with rhythmic breathing (face in the water, turning the head to the side to breathe), 1 length of backstroke, demonstrate basic breaststroke, be able to go underwater to the bottom of the pool in the shallow end, and be comfortable swimming in the deep end. Swimmers who can successfully complete this criterion will be placed in a group based on age and ability.

We focus on helping swimmers of all ages and abilities have fun, develop friendships, set goals, and experience success in the best possible team setting. We aim to instill a sense of Spirit, Character, and Pride in all participants, and we strive to assist our swimmers in becoming outstanding individuals in all aspects of life, even beyond their athletic achievements.
