Here is the recap from our championship weekend at the Texas Age Group Short Course Championship in Dallas, TX: (Number of new team records set: (a new record)): 47!
Nitro Swimming, Home of the 2011 Short Course Texas Age Group Swimming Champions!!
Most that were at the meet this past weekend returned home in the wee hours of early this morning from Dallas where Nitro collected several honors, including the overall team title in a hard fought duel with the Woodlands out of the Houston area. In addition to winning the team title, Nitro’s Abby Artmann won the 13-14 girls individual high point trophy! Our 10 and Under boys won their age group, as did the 13-14 girls.
The meet started on Thursday night and found us in 18th place after the first night. We climbed into 2nd place after Friday night, but we were about 63 points out of 2nd. We closed it up even tighter after Saturday night’s finals, and were 5 points behind the Woodlands at that point.
Saturday night also had us setting a new TAGS record in the Boys 10 and Under 200 free relay. The relay team consisted of Michael Shay, Sam Artmann, Jay Lenner III, and Cameron Katzman. Way to go!!
We needed a big Sunday morning prelims session to set us up into striking distance for Sunday’s finals. The Coaches surprised the team with a Sunday surprise t-shirt – complete with a Justin Bieber quote on the back, and the boys were especially excited over that (just kidding about the boys, but the kids were all smiles and ready to roll). We were set up well after Sunday morning, but nothing is a sure thing, and we needed a big finals.
When Sunday finals began, we took a slight one point lead that lasted for only one event when Jared Chulavatr moved from a 3rd seed to a final 2nd place in his 50 breastroke. The Woodlands countered with their own strong finishes and re-took the lead. At one point they stretched their lead to 30 points over us, but we weren’t about to roll over. Josh Artmann’s come from behind 200 Backstroke win was the momentum we were looking for.
Soon afterward, came a very rare 1-2-3 finish from Sydney Tan, Lauren Thompson, and Abby Artmann, and the place went wild!
Here come the Nitro relays next, where the kids were lined up along side the pool cheering as loud as they could: “Ni-tro Re-lays, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap. Ni-tro Re-lays, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap…”
Our relays came through in a big way —- with our B relays playing as big of a role as our A relays, and in many cases, swimmers from the B relays out-splitting swimmers on the A. It was a well balanced attack, many of our B relays scoring – including a 1-3 finish for the 10 and Under boys in their 200 medley relay!
Thanks to every swimmer who attended; the siblings, the parents, and the extended families and friends who were all there.
