**Most of the
following information is available on the Ripon Aquatics website.
The costs, etc., are listed on the website, and there will be an
orientation meeting on Monday, August 4th, for interested parties.
Again, between this email and the RA website, all of your questions
will probably be answered.**
Ripon Aquatics (the year round team that shares our pool) is once
again offering an "extended season", for swimmers who want to spend
a bit more time in the water. Mid Valley Swim League, the
recreational league to which the Sea Lions belong, allows swimmers
to swim in the USS (year round) league for up to three extra
months, until the end of October, and still retain their
eligibility to swim for Sea Lions next year. In effect, you would
be joining Ripon Aquatics for three months, beginning August 4th,
and going until October 31st. For more information on extended
swim, please to go the Ripon
Aquatics website, and
click on "extended swim" for all of the pertinent information.
RA will also be offering a year round water polo team, beginning
August 4th as well. For information on the water polo team, please
go to the same website and click on "water polo" in the menu at the
top. There will be a significant discount for swimmers who join
both RA and the water polo team. The extended swim team will be
coached by a combination of Ervin, Christine, Erik, and Kim, all of
whom coached Sea Lions. There's no way to know who your child's
coach will be until the swimmers have been in the water for a
while, and the coaches can see how the skills levels are spread
out.
Some things to know:
*There is a link on the RA home page to an online sign up for USS;
everyone who swims extended must join the USS league, and the cost
for this is $55.00/swimmer.
*If you plan to attend the Sonora meet during the first weekend of
August, you should sign up for your USS card as soon as you can. In
addition, if you're going to the Sonora meet, you should plan to
start training with RA on Monday, July 21st, so you'll be prepared
for the meet. This meet is up on Swim Connection right now, so you
should sign up right away if you know you're going.
*Meets are not mandatory. Everyone signs up for meets online, on
their own, and pays individually, depending on the number of events
the swimmer will swim.
*Most meets are two days long, though, again, you don't have to go
for both days if you don't want to.
*USS meets offer a greater variety of events, with many longer
events which aren't available during the Sea Lions' season.
*Only the more advanced swimmers will practice the full two hours;
each swimmer's practice time will be at the coaches'
discretion.
*USS meets are usually much shorter than Sea Lions meets. There
are usually no relays, either (Sonora is an exception to this).
**If you swim past the October 31st cutoff, whether it be for one
month or one day, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR ELIGIBILITY FOR SEA LIONS FOR
THE FOLLOWING YEAR**--This must be stressed because there have been
problems in the past when people wanted to give year round a try,
decided around December or January that they didn't like it, then
found out that they had lost their eligibility for Sea Lions.
Please use the three month extended season to decide whether or not
you want to continue with year round; otherwise, you will lose an
entire Sea Lions season. The October 31st rule doesn't apply to
water polo, only to swimming.
If you have any questions regarding any of the above, please
contact Christine Zador at the email address on the website, or ask
Tani Hanes, Rosie and Spenser Vaughn's mother--she's usually at the
pool every evening between 5:30-7:00.
