It was a perfect day at the Ripon Aquatics Center as the Sea Lions
took on three other teams in the MVSL’s Western Zone
Championships. A light breeze rippled the surface of the
water as the youngest Sea Lions, the 6 and Under group, took to the
water for their 100 yard medley relay. This team of four,
which included Roland Davis, Gregory Clark, Gracie Barbieri, and
Jason VanderWeide, swam to a second place finish to get things
rolling. They were followed in quick succession by our 7-8
Girls, Gianna Smith, Breana Barrios, Andria Martin, and Chloe
Winter, who blew in for third place, earning 12 points for the team
as they did so. The 7-8 Boys, Andrew VanderWeide, Jacob
Thompson, and the Esenwein brothers Noah and Daniel, came in
second, as did the 9-10 girls “Aý team, Cassie Apple,
Zaire Davis, Morgan Sheaffer, and Emma Lewis. The 9-10 Girls
“Bý team managed a seventh place finish, putting up 4
points for their team. For the 9-10 Boys relay, eight year
old Andrew Britton “aged upý to swim with big brother
Christian, and, coupled with Jacob Martin on back stroke and
“flyingý butterflyer Zach Pratt, these guys brought
home the first win of the day, placing first with a time of
2:40.88. Next came the 11-12 Girls “Aý team,
Kaylie Sheaffer, Rosie Vaughn, Katelin Britton, and Chelsea
McAllister, who finished first, earning 16 points for their
team. These four girls, along with Beth Lindemann and Kaitlyn
Groshong in varying combinations, carried home an undefeated
season, never losing a Medley Relay to any other team in their
division. The “Bý team, comprised of Hollie
Hammarstrom, Taylor McAllister, Kaitlyn Groshong, and Kelly Wesley,
came in fifth, which meant 8 more points for the Sea Lions.
The 11-12 Boys, Corey Winter, Scott Cowan, Diego Sevillano, and
Bradley Clark, came in second, while the 13-14 Girls, Amber Pujol,
Kenzie Yates, Melissa Arenas, and Karyssa Costa, touched the wall
for a third place finish. In the “Big Kidsý
division, first the 15-18 Girls, Cierra Reed, Annika Rigney,
Janelle Gibbons, and Ashley Pujol, finished second. Then came
the 15-18 Boys, where the “Aý team, comprised of Jesse
Powers, Delayne Mack, Spenser Vaughn and Wesley Eisenga, came in
first, and the “Bý team, made up of Joey Fox, Juan
Sevillano, Jacob Carlson, and Brent Cowan, came in second, the two
teams together putting up 30 big points for their team.
We had many kids put up incredible times at this meet, including
three new records, one by Christian Britton and two by his sister
Katelin. We also had seven high point winners, whose names
should be familiar to all by now: Andrew, Christian, and
Katelin Britton, Andria Martin, Roland Davis, Annika Rigney, and
Jesse Powers, all of whom finished first in every event. In
fact, three of these swimmers, Andrew Britton, Christian Britton,
and Annika Rigney, placed first in every single event for the
entire 2008 season.
The seconds fell away once again as, from young to old, swimmers
improved their times. Little Kylee Zador took 30 seconds off
in her events, Molly Ysit 24 seconds, Ella Yeoman 10 seconds, Brent
White 11 seconds, Kelly Wesely 10 seconds, Alana Pujol 10 seconds,
Kate Phelps 7 seconds, Ian Howells an astonishing 45 seconds,
Delaney Hall an equally astonishing 40 seconds, Maren Hammarstrom
15 seconds, Gabrielle Gaytan 25 seconds, Karyssa Costa 11 seconds,
Rachel Crew 23 seconds, and Brittany Barbieri 8 seconds.
The day ended as it had begun, with relays, Free style relays this
time. Once again, our mixed 6 and Unders brought home second
place points, but this time the “Bý team got in on the
action with third place points as well. The 7-8 girls placed
both second and seventh, and the 7-8 boys placed second by less
than two seconds. The 9-10 girls placed third, fourth, and
eighth in quick succession, while the 9-10 boys brought home first
and sixth place finishes. The 11-12 girls, who had an
undefeated season in the Medley Relay, were not so lucky in the
Free; they placed second by .4 seconds, a nail biter to the end
that left many people hoarse from rooting for the
girls. The “Bý team also earned points in the
Free Relay with a fifth place finish. The 11-12 Boys earned
both 4th and 6th place finishes, and the 13-14 girls put up both
second and fifth place points for their team. The 13-14 Boys
came in second, and the 15-18 girls earned 10 points with a fourth
place finish. The 15-18 boys “Aý team finished
first by a comfortable margin, but, in a surprise upset, our
“Bý team, Josh Fox, Zach Newman, Juan Sevillano, and
anchor Jacob Carlson, pulled out a second place finish, beating the
second seeded Tracy Tritons team by .86 seconds, putting a
wonderful finish to a fantastic day of swimming.
The Sea Lions 2008 season has drawn to a close; their awards dinner
was on Monday, July 21st. They will hit the water next April
first, rested and ready to do it all over again.
