Happy Mothers Day! Mothers Day Festivities
prevailed for my family, so I am late in getting out the latest
Master's Nationals Recap. More amazing swims by
everybody.
Day 3 is over and
VCM is still holding strong to a Top 10 position in the combined
team standings (8th – 367 points). The
4th and final day is tomorrow (Sunday). There were
24 individual swims, so I’ll touch on a few of the
highlights.
Stacey Warmuth and
Coach Lee Anne Ghimenti started the day off in the women’s
500 free with two fine performances. Lee Anne took
3rd in the W35-39 age group (5:33.56) and Stacey did a
PR for 5th in the W50-54 age group (5:44.64).
Larry Raffaelli and Jim McConica were the team’s lone
200 backstrokers and placed 5th and 6th in
their age groups. In the 50 free, Bryant Lum led VCM with a
3rd in M45-49 (:22.68) and Michael Blatt tied for
8th in M50-54 (:23.03). John Chung (:24.11), Andy
Marker (:25.66), and Ron Powers (:26.02) rounded out our
sprinters. The next event was probably VCM’s best of the
meet….the100 breast. Hubie Kerns won the 3rd
national title for VCM with a stellar 1:04.27 in the M55-59
division. Great swims were also posted by Kim Leigh (1:11.21
– 5th W35-39), Chris
Cooper (1:02.93 – 8th M40-44), Bryant Lum
(1:03.46 – 7th M45-49), Michael Blatt (1:05.57
– 10th M50-54), John Derr (1:09.73 –
4th M60-64), Michael
Wood (1:19.23 – 4th M65-69), and Bart
Bleuel (1:22.40 - 6th M65-69).
The 200 IM was
highlighted by Kim Leigh (2:22.41 – 5th W35-39)
and Coach Kurt (2:08.66 – 10th M40-44). The
100 fly brought a 4th national title to VCM with a
superb swim by John Derr (:59.65 – M60-64). Mike Shaffer
missed out on a 5th title by 39-hundreths with a :51.20
in the
M40-44.
The day concluded
with some more fun relays. VCM fielded 3 teams in the
men’s 200 medley relay. The 55+ crew of McConica (back),
Kerns (breast), Derr (fly), and Raffaelli (free) took
3rd place. The 45+ quartet of Lum (back), Blatt
(breast), Marker (fly), and Powers (free) placed 12th,
and the 35+ team of Shaffer (back), Cooper (breast), Chung (fly),
and Baron (free) placed 4th.
