New SSYMCA Thunder & Lightning Policy

 On Monday, June 22, 2009, the South Shore YMCA at Millpond implemented a new Thunder & Lightning Policy as it pertains to our Aquatics areas. Upon recommendations from the YMCA of the USA and the Redwoods Group (our insurance company), we amended our past policy. Our goal at the South Shore YMCA is to always keep the safety of our members and staff a number one priority.

Indoor Facilities:

  • When thunder and lightning occurs, we will clear and close the Indoor Aquatics Center, including the Lap Pool, the Family Pool, the steam room, the whirlpool, the sauna and all surrounding deck areas.
  • These areas will re-open 30 minutes after the last lightning is seen or thunder is heard.

Outdoor Facilities:

  • When thunder and lightning occurs, we will close the Outdoor Center, including all pools, changing areas, locker rooms and deck areas.
  • These areas will re-open 30 minutes after the last lightning is seen or thunder is heard.
  • Please note that the Indoor Aquatics Center is also not available during this time.
