July 18th,
2009, El Dorado Hills. The Tasmanian Devils completed a
perfect home season, defeating the Sierra SharKs by a score of
491-406. Megan Jory (age 10) led off with a win in Event 1,
9-10 Girls 100 yard IM, and the Devils again started very
fast against a Suburban Swim League opponent. The Taz
completed the 2009 campaign with a record of 5-1 (3-0 at home) and
sole possession of second place in the SSL standings behind rival
Park Terrace (6-0).
EDH used
strong performances to steadily build is lead throughout the
day. The Taz led 121-90 after the Medley Relay series.
Following the freestyle events, the Taz led 255-190 at the midway
point. The closest racing of the day came in the backstroke
series, where the Taz and Sharks swam dead even at 63-63.
Both clubs swam closely through the breastroke and butterfly events
before the Taz surged again in the final event series, the
freestyle relays.
The Devils were led by the
Verner brothers, Daniel (16) and Joshua (14), who
combined for 36 points. Daniel led all swimmers with 21
points while Joshua notched a perfect score of 15 points
in his three events, tied for third place among all
swimmers. Patrick McIntee (8) and Trevor Dong (13) each
scored 13 points for the Taz
men.
The Taz
women were again led by Morgan Jones (11), who scored a perfect 15
points against the Sharks. Jones completed a remarkable
dual meet season in which she scored 84 of a possible
90 points in her events. Taylor Turville (17)
scored 14 points for the Taz. Marion Sanborn (17) had 13
points for the Taz. Madeline Prather and Julia Lamb
(both 16) each had 10 points in individual event
scoring.
Claire Tomaszewski (6) led the Taz
6&Under swimmers with 5 points. Patrick
Sammon (5) was second with 4
points.
The Devils marked the occasion
of its final home meet by recognizing its
departing seniors. Matt Candau, who swam
for the Taz for 8 seasons, will enroll next year at Loyola
Marymount. Nick Rohrer, a Devil since age 9, will
attend UC Davis next year, where he will continue his
athletic career as a member of the wrestling team. Jack
Crawford, a Taz swimmer since age 6, will enroll next year at the
University of Colorado. Derek Dong, in his eighth
season with the Taz, will enroll at Cal Poly SLO next
year, as will teammate Andrew Janicki. Dong and
Janicki helped break 10-year old club records in the
15-18 Men’s 200 yard Medley and Freestyle relays
last year at the League Championship meet. Janicki
ends a truly remarkable career as the current owner of 10
Taz records and 4 Suburban Swim League records in age groups
ranging from 9-10 through
15-18.
The Devils next
challenge comes next weekend at the SSL Championship
Meet at Sierra College (Friday July 24th through Sunday
July 26th). The Devils will attempt to defend the title they
won last season against a very strong team from Park
Terrace. The Penguins, who defeated the Taz in a very close
meet to open the season, hope to reclaim the title that
they last held in 2007.
