Record Setting Weekend at Age Group Champ's

WAVE rolled into the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary with a run of strong performances building up over the 2008-2009 season. The roll continued throughout the competition as many Team records were broken and it seemed that nearly every swim was a life time best performance. The total Team effort from WAVE athletes contributed to scoring 1433 points, which placed WAVE 4th out of 35 scoring teams from across North Carolina—a sharp improvement from last summer’s 7th place finish. 

The 13-14 age group showed off their stamina as Kelsey Moore and Ryan Cade each competed in 18 races over the four day meet, while Wesley Sigmon raced in 17 times over the weekend. These same three where selected to represent North Carolina Zone Team (All-Star Team) next week in Florida. 
In the 11-12 age group Olivia Ontjes also was selected to the NC Zone Team, which is no surprise considering she has the fastest 100 Free in the nation and five of her other events are in the top 7 as well. The rest of the 11-12’s raced with tremendous effort in each and every race, which is evident with the large amount of time drops.
Compared to last year the 10 & Unders marked the most improvement for WAVE. Nine individuals scored points for the Team as Greg Lombana lead the 10 & unders by placing in the top 8 in nine individual events and scoring 111 points (second most points scored on WAVE, 1st was Ontjes).
Head Coach John Roy stated, “I am really pleased with the individual performances, wins, records, and display of team pride that went on during Age Group Champs. However, what I am most proud of was our swimmers ability to perform in the clutch—showing mental toughness—during close races and especially during the Relay’s!”
New Team Records
Olivia Ontjes improved upon her own 50 free, 100 free and 200 IM records. Olivia’s 50 Free is currently the 20th fastest time in history for an American 11-12 year old. Ontjes also smashed Sarah Henry’s 2004 200 Free and 400 IM records, all while rewriting Shannon Curry’s 1990 50 Breast record.   
Haley Bishop lowered Molly Tesch 2001 standard in the 100 fly and then crushed Alison Hendren’s 2004 record in the 200 Fly.
Kelsey Moore broke Virginia Soderberg’s 1994 200 Back record by 1/100th of second.
 Ryan Cade set the record in the 200 Breast, lowering Ryan Cox’s 2003 time a full second and a half.
Girls 11-12 400 Free Relay of Olivia Ontjes, Haley Bishop, Caroline Knowles, & Amelia Price lowered the 2004 mark of 4’26.08 (set by Sarah Henry, Alison Hendren, Sarah-Bailey Stocks & Sydney Briley) down to 4’21.69
Girls 11-12 400 Medley Relay of Haley Bennison, Olivia Ontjes, Haley Bishop, & Caroline Knowles crushed the 1992 record 5’01.05 with a 4’55.27.
Girls 13-14 400 free relay Kelsey Moore, Hannah Stahmer, Claire Liu, & Alex van Dorsten lowered the current standard set last month to 4’10.24
13-14 Girls 800 Free Relay of Kelsey Moore, Hannah Stahmer, Claire Liu, & Elisabeth Holmes erased the 1992 record of 9’13.70 and rewrote it with a 9’01.00
