Devils Race to 2nd Place Finish at SSL Champs

July 26th, Rocklin, CA: The El Dorado Hills Tasmanian Devils swam to a second-place finish at the Suburban Swim League Championships this weekend at Sierra College. The Devils, swimming with pride and passion, finished with a respectable 1,055.50 points, but were not able to overcome one of the deepest and fastest Park Terrace teams in recent years. The Penguins scored 1,466 points to reclaim the title that they lost last year to El Dorado Hills.

The Devils and Penguins have now traded league titles over the last four years, with the Devils winning in 2006 and 2008, and the Penguins winning in 2007 and 2009.

The Devils were again led by Joshua Verner (age 14), who led all Taz scorers with 49 points, six points short of a perfect score.  Joshua was fourth overall in the boys and men’s division. Joshua’s older brother Daniel (16), was second among Taz boys and men with 33 points.  Trevor Dong (13) was third with 32 points.

The Taz girls and women were led by Annie Harriman (15) with 42 points.  Harriman tied for fifth among all female competitors. Morgan Jones (11) was eighth overall with 40.5 points.  Katie Weiss (14) tied for ninth with 40 points.

In age-group scoring, Morgan Jones was the top scorer in the 11-12 girls division.  Joshua Verner led all 13-14 boys. Annie Harriman was second among 15-16 girls. Jack Peterson (8) was third in the 7-8 boys group with 23 points. Allison Prior (10) was third in the 9-10 girls division with 23 points. Katie Weiss (14) was third in the 13-14 girls group.

Taz swimmers lowered several club records over the weekend.

Claire Tomaszewski (age 6) broke an eleven year old mark in the 6 and Under Girls 25-yard backstroke. Her finals time of 22.10 lowered the previous mark of 22.36 set in 1988 by Emily Baracco. Tomaszewski missed the venerable mark by 0.02 in the preliminaries before going on to break the record in the event final. Tomaszewski finished third in the event final behind Emily Cooley and Marin Vial, both of the Folsom Sea Otters, who both set the SSL record in the event.

Annie Harriman (15) shattered a 14 year old club record in the 15-16 Girls 100-yard backstroke. Harriman’s winning time of 1:04.72 bettered the previous mark of 1:05.40 set in 1995 by Jenny Baracco.

Madeline Prather (16) won the 15-16 Girls 50-yard freestyle.  Her time of 25.88 was 0.01 faster than the previous mark of 25.89 set in 2004 by Chandra Gardener.

The 13-14 Boys team of Eric Rohrer, Bryan Cole, Joshua Verner, and Trevor Dong set two club records.  Their time of 1:52.31 in the 200-yard Medley Relay shattered the previous mark of 1:54.29 set the previous year at Champs by Yanagihara, Verner, Hamilton, and Elkins.

The team swam the 200-yard Freestyle Relay in 1:38.88, lowering by nearly a second the previous mark of 1:39.86 set by Elkins, Cole, Verner, and Hamilton.

The Folsom Sea Otters scored 892 points to take third place and earn the club’s first ever trophy at Champs. The Sierra Sharks scored 878.5 points to finish in fourth place. The College Greens Gators scored 680 points to finish fifth. The Loomis Basin Dolphins finished in sixth place with 667.5 points. The Broadstone Barracudas finished in seventh place with 557.5 points.

The Taz also finished second to Park Terrace in the dual meet standings.

The Tasmanian Devils open the 2010 season on June 5th at College Greens.
