Karyn Jewell Leads BC team in PEI

Karyn Jewell, competing for BC at the Canada Games in PEI this week started the provincial team off to a great meet by capturing the Gold Medal in the very first event of the competition - the women’s 1500m Freestyle.

Karyn started off strong and never looked back as she turned in a smoking fast time of 16:29.45, that ranks her as the 3rd fastest Canadian and 9th in the world this year. Her time slashed a massive 23 seconds off her personal best and puts her 29 seconds away from the Canadian senior national record in the event!

 

 

The meet continues all week, Karyn’s next race is the 10km openwater on Sunday, August 30th.

Karyn Jewell, WDSC, set the B.C. Canada Games team on fire with an opening event Gold medal swim in the women’s 1500 Freestyle. Jewell led almost wire to wire to take the win in 16:29.45. Richard Weinberger, UVIC-PCS picked up the torch and grabbed the Gold medal in the men’s 800 freestyle. Craig Dagnall, Island , was .07 behind to win the silver. Julianne Brown , Chena, had a great swim to finish fourth in the women’s 1500, missing a medal by .04




The women’s 4X200 freestyle relay had a solid four person effort to come away with the bronze medal. Olivia Montgomery , Taryne Landry, Laura Sze and Julianne Brown held off a late charging Quebec team to garner the medal.



The boys 4X200 freestyle relay had excellent swims by all four boys to place fourth. Michael Cai, Jeremy Bagshaw, Nicholas Sinclair and Alec Page swam nearly as fast as the first place seed time going into the event.

Six events, 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze and 2 fourth place finishes means a very good start for the team. B.C. is trying to win the over-all Canada Games Provincial points race. B.C. led by one point after the first week of competition. The swimmers intend to do their part to bring home the title.

The meet continues tomorrow with the 50 Breaststroke, 400 I.M., 200 Butterfly, 100 Freestyle and 200 Freestyle relay. Also included in the program tomorrow are the Para-swimmers and Special Olympics athletes.
