Weekly Update Sept 21, 2009

This weeks practice schedule:

Thurs Sept 24: NO PRACTICE due to PWHS Girls swim meet at the pool.

There will be regular practices all other days this week.

Dryland Training

Dryland training for Intermediate II and Advanced Group swimmers will start this week, and will be held every Monday and Wednesday. To participate in Dryland training, swimmers need to be at the pool 30 minutes before the start of practice, dressed in t-shirt, shorts, socks and gym shoes. Swimmers cannot participate if they do not have shoes and socks. Dryland training will consist of 20 minutes of stair running, which has been shown to be a very simple and effective way of developing leg and core strength. Done consistently through the season it contributes to maintaining aerobic fitness and strength, and can help swimmers overcome plateaus in performance.

Meet Deadline Signup

·          Lockport Homer meet: Sat & Sun Oct 17 & 18

This is the first meet of the season. The sign up deadline is midnight TONIGHT. Please sign your swimmers up online TODAY. We will not be able to accept late entries. If you are an enthusiastic person who has already looked at the event lineup on the meet packet, please note that there has been a change. The meet packet now posted on the event page shows the correct lineup.

·          Mock Meet: Thursday Oct 1 @ 5:00pm

The signup deadline for our Mock meet is midnight on Thursday, Sept 24 . The Mock meet is our “pretend” meet where we simulate an actual swim meet for the kids so they have an idea what a meet is like before they actually attend one. Last year we received feedback from many parents who felt it was a great introduction to swim meets for their young or new swimmer.

This year we will do things a little differently. Pierre will choose 3 events for each swimmer to swim, as he does in a normal meet. We will send out the heat sheets early in the week so that you can see which heat and lane your swimmer will be in. We will conduct relays if there is enough time.

We will need approx. 25 parents to volunteer to help run the meet. You can sign up for a job online. Go to the event page then click on the Job Sign-Up button. We will not be able to run the meet if we don’t have enough volunteers, so please sign up now. This is also a great chance for parents who have never been to a meet before to learn how to be a lane timer. This is one job all our parents are expected to do at meets.

Could any parents who have received Officials training, please reply to this email and let us know if you are available to “officiate” (practice your skills) at the Mock Meet.

Jets Ghostly Gathering meet

We have been accepted into the Joliet Jets Ghostly Gathering meet on Oct 24-25. Copies of our entry reports and a Meet Info sheet have been uploaded to the website. They will also be emailed out to entered swimmers soon.

Snorkels

You may have noticed that the Advanced group swimmers have started using snorkels at practice. The snorkel allows swimmers to concentrate on body balance, head position and stroke technique by eliminating the breathing cycle rotation. Greater emphasis and promotion of proper body alignment, complete axis rotation and arm stroke pattern become automatic when swimmers use the snorkel. Regular use of the snorkel during training also increases CO2 tolerance and VO2 max.

Ultimate swimming has purchased 12 snorkels and is planning to purchase more. When you swimmer is given a snorkel, you have 2 options: you may purchase the snorkel outright for $30, or your swimmer may use the snorkel but must return it at the end of the season. (However, if the snorkel is broken or damaged, you must pay the replacement cost of $30). Parent of swimmers who have received snorkels will be contacted about these arrangements.

Swimmers responsibilities

Last week the showers in the boys locker room were left on (running very hot) after the Developmental/Intermediate I practice. Parents, please remind your swimmers to turn off the showers and leave the locker room clean after practice. Remember, we are guests at the high school and our relationship with the school administration depends partly on the way we treat school property.

USS Athlete Clinic

Thanks to all the swimmers and parents who attended the USS Athlete Clinic last week. It certainly was interesting! Hopefully your swimmer learnt something new while having a bit of fun. Photos will be posted to the website soon.

Pie Sales

Fall is quickly approaching. This year you, your family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers do not have to go out searching for pies, you can buy your holiday pies through Ultimate Swimming. We will be making pies available with the proceeds going to our scholarship fund, helping swimmers participate on our team if their families face financial hardships. Please look for the forms we will be distributing on October 5th. Return the forms by November 11 to enjoy delicious pies just in time for the holidays. Pies will be available for pickup at practice on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Easy and convenient, plus the pies are all quality products from Sarah Lee.

This is not a compulsory fundraiser, but everyone is encouraged to buy/sell pies.
