What to expect at your first Super Splash

What to expect for the Super Splash??

1. When you enter the hallway that leads to the HSE new pool, you will need to highlight your name on the Sign in sheet. This verifies your presence and officially enters you into the timing system. Without signing in, even if you are present, you most likely will not be allowed to compete. This is the norm for all meets.

2. Parents and visitors will be required to stay in the bleacher areas and avoid the pool deck at all costs. This is a USA Swimming rule (the governing body for all legit competitive swimming entities) and greatly challenges our liability to injury or other accident if violated. Parents, please stay off the deck……..

3. Unless you are an official or volunteer. Volunteers will be needed for this meet-- usually only for timing and this helps pass the time and is more comfortable than sitting in the stands!!! Volunteers for timers usually report on deck after an announcement is made for the Timers Meeting, which usually takes place under the main scoreboard 15 minutes prior to the meet start.

4. For parents in the stands, you can grab a Psych Sheet. This is a reference that shows what each swimmer in the meet is competing in. It might take some examination, but you should be able to find your child in 2 to 3 events for this meet (assuming you signed up in time-- this is printed well before the meet starts).

5. When swimmers enter the pool deck, they will be able to find an alphabetical list of swimmers that shows what each swimmer is competing in. Coaches will be present to help at this stage.

6. After the timing and computer volunteers go through the sign in sheet and verify who is present, they will release a few copies of the Heat Sheet. This shows swimmers and coaches exactly what heat and lane each athlete will compete in. This is the swimmers road map for the day. Coaches will also help at this point, in addition to any Clerk of Course volunteers. It takes the timing system and computer volunteers 30 minutes or more after warm up begins to complete this process; with this in mind, there is not time to make mass copies. Occasionally, copies of the Heat Sheet will be made available to parents, however this is not the norm. We suggest that the parents use the Psych Sheet they picked up when the entered the pool area to determine roughly when their child will swim. From here you can start to watch each race carefully and predict when your swimmer will compete…. and of course cheer for both your swimmers and those in the same event.

7. After each swimmer races, they are required to visit their coach for post race commentary and maybe even a cool down (easy swimming to help flush harmful post race metabolites from the swimmer’s system). Cool downs are an absolute REQUIREMENT for more experienced swimmers like Sharks, Marlins & Piranhas. Parents, please support this process (Race, Coach Commentary, then Cool-down)!!! After this is done, the swimmer may be released to the bleacher area for a short visit to the parents. Depending on conditions and the pace of the meet, coaches may instead ask that swimmers stay on deck so that they can be ready for their next event.
