Less than a month ago, Todd Larsen, former NOVA coach and
14 year ISL coach made a trip to the emergency room due to severe
pain and swelling in his leg. Todd was diagnosed with acute
lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L.) and was immediately hospitalized.
He has already completed one round of an aggressive
state-of-the-art chemotherapy at Hoag and will continue to undergo
treatments for this serious illness over the course of the next
year.
As many of you know, in addition to his role as swimming coach
and mentor, Todd, is also the director of Irvine Music Academy and
has been teaching many youth to play instruments and sing. He
formed a "School of Rock" which has been a tremendous success with
his music students.
Whether it has been through coaching or teaching, Todd has
undoubtedly had a positive impact on hundreds of families in Orange
County and beyond. Todd has an infectious enthusiasm for life
and a passion for teaching/coaching.
Since Todd’s treatment for the cancer will essentially
destroy his immune system he is not able to teach or coach because
the risk of infection is so great. This loss of income and
the excessive cost of medical care will be a huge challenge.
The fact that he is not able to do the work he is most
passionate about will be another daily struggle since he loves to
be around people and hates to sit still. Thankfully, Todd is
surrounded by a loving and supportive family including his wife
Kelly and their 10 month old son Garrett.
Many community members have already joined forces to help Todd
beat his leukemia and provide both emotional and financial support
to him and his family as they take this unexpected
journey.
Please help support Coach Todd and join Nova for the Rock
’n’ Splash Relay Bash on October 31st from 9-2 at
Woollett Aquatics Center. Registration forms are attached.
Please consider participating in one of the following
ways:
1. Register as a swimmer or "ghost swimmer"
The "Rock ’n’ Splash Relay Bash" (for swimmers and
non-swimmers) will take place at Woollett Aquatics Center on
October 31st benefiting the Larsen family. Attached
you’l find a packet of information which includes event
details, registration and pledge forms. There will be a table for
registration at Woollett from now until Oct. 30th in the evenings
and a drop box.
The registration fee of $10 includes lunch, custom swim cap,
custom bag tag, raffle tickets, games, a chance to win amazing
prizes and even the opportunity to meet local Olympians.
Event t-shirts and Jason Lezak autographed swim caps can be
earned by raising pledges for Coach Todd and his
family.
2. Form a team of swimmers
We would like to have strong NOVA presence at the event.
Teams consist of 8 swimmers. There are no age minimums
or limits. We will be video taping/web casting the event for
Todd and it will be a powerful message to him from the community at
large. Since Todd loves a good cheer competition we’ve
decided to have one at the kick off of the event and everyone is
welcome to participate. Swimmers or family members that would
like to help, but are unavailable to come may sign up as "Ghost
Swimmers" and a ghost with their name will be hung around the
fences at Woollett.
3. Make a financial contribution in any amount to
underwrite the event or donate directly to the Larsen family.
If you would like to make a donation of funds, raffle/auction
items or underwrite an event expense please contact Liz Eastin for
more information at 714-697-3306 or by email:
lizzylew@sbcglobal.net.
Your support of this event will help us demonstrate what an
amazing NOVA/swim community we are - not only to Todd and his
family, but to the City of Irvine and beyond.
