WAVE Swimming takes over the Beach!

Wrightsville Beach, NC – On a beautiful October weekend, over 110 WAVE swimmers descended on Wrightsville Beach, NC and had two great days of team building.

On Saturday, sixty 12-&-Unders started off the day with in-water, and out-of-water workouts and team building exercises.  Coaches Beth and Michelle had a wonderful time with the Level 1 and BC swimmers. Coaches Jeff, JP and Brandon worked the Level 2 swimmers hard. While Coaches Bescher and Brendan played dice and blackjack with the level 3 swimmers - all centered around determining the number of shuttle runs they had to complete.  While the athletes were going through their paces, Head Coach John Roy was able to visit all of the groups and conduct a Q & A session with parents who were enjoying the day with their swimmers.

After a morning of hard work on the beach, the swimmers ate lunch and learned about nutrition, goal setting and participated in additional team-building activities. The day concluded with free time on the beach and the pool, featuring a look into the clubhouse through the underwater windows. Former Wave swimmer and coach Lauren Bays made a guest appearance in the afternoon to join in on the fun as well.

Sunday morning, fifty 13-&-Overs invaded the North Carolina coast. Their day had a very similar format to the younger swimmers. The morning workout kicked off with a two mile run to Johnnie Mercer’s Pier accompanied by Coaches Ed and JP.  Coach JP finished 6th after 5 pairs came in.  Leading the pack were the pair of Christian Mason and Lee Addison.  Following the run, the swimmers completed three circuits of a 300 yard run beach run followed by a 300 yard swim.  The workout part ended with Coach Ed’s version of musical chairs using diving sticks. Congratulations to Lee Addison, Petch Lamson, Sarah Jabusch and overall winner Haley Bishop. The competition was spirited. Each swimmer exhibited determination to win and to be first athlete to grab the diving stick buried in the ground.

After lunch the swimmers had some brief talks from the coaches, followed by free time on the beach and in the pool.  The swimmers organized a game of beach football and made human pyramids.  They made an awesome piece of art in the sand that read “GO WAVE SWIMMING.” Coach Bescher became a target in the sand battle getting hit in the face, back, and hair.

Overall it was a great weekend.  The weather was definitely much improved over last year, featuring almost 90 degree temperatures on Saturday. The coaching staff would like to thank all the parents that helped make this weekend run smoothly and a great success. Thank you to all of the chaperons, hospitality helpers, cooler donations, clean-up volunteers and gate keepers.  Two big shout outs to Cathy Bishop who help order the food and coordinate that effort and to Brian Tobey for getting 10 cases of water donated.
