Over the past weekend, October 9th
– 11th, the Sierra Marlins Swim Team competed at
the Spooktacular Swim Meet in Roseville with 134 Sierra Marlins
swimmers participating. With great
weather over the course of the entire weekend, the swim team put
together a great team effort that included fantastic swimming from
all the groups involved.
The Developmental
and Mini Marlins had a total of 19 swimmers who participated from
both groups and everyone in the group had a best time. One of the main things that stood out to Coach
Barbara and Coach Erica was how great the swimmers did checking in
before and after their races. The
Coaches were very proud to see the swimmers learn the importance of
coming over and telling them their heat and lane. The swimmers quickly learned that Coach Barbara
has a toy box full of fun for the swimmers who check in before and
after their races. The Developmental
and Mini Marlins have been working extra hard in practice on their
streamlines and the Coaches could really see the hard work pay off
in their races. There were great
streamlines off the starts and the turns. Congratulations to Bryce Hubbard for winning the
25 Free and Jorden Miller for winning the 25 Free and 100 Breast.
The Black/Red started the season very strong
with an impressive showing at the CCA Spooktacular meet. The seven 500 freestyle participants set the
stage for an amazing meet Friday night by placing all three boys
and all four girls as top 8 finishers.
Congratulations to Chloe Miller (1), Allena Thompson (2), Delaney
Downs (5), Fiona Dodson (7), Sarah Dolley (8), Charlie Velez (3),
Nicolas Dolley (4), and Leon Kassienko (7). Our strong open water
training and racing clearly helped us as this was the strongest
showing of 500 yard event racing that Coach Aimee has ever seen
from this group.
The weekend continued strong with 25 swimmers
from the Black/Red group racing to a combined total of over 150
best times! The group had 59 event
swims that were fast enough to qualify for the Las Vegas travel
meet in December. Wow! The Black/Red
group had many swimmers go best times in every event they raced at
the meet. It was wonderful to watch
Courtney Krause, Jessica Hufford, and Jennifer Lathrop compete in
their first official meet as Sierra Marlins swimmers. In the 9/10 year old girls’ races, Chloe
Miller and Allena Thompson combined to win 10 of the 11 events
offered at the meet. Chloe won the
100,200,500 freestyle, 50/100 fly and breast, as well as the 100
IM. Allena won the 50/100 Back. In the boys division we had many top 8
finishes, often placing 3 or 4 boys in the top 8 spots. Individual event winners were Gary Woo
in the 100 Back, Leon Kassienko (9 & 10) 100 Breast, and
Jonathan Chu (8 & Under) 50/100 Breast, 100 IM.
The Junior and Pre-Senior group kicked off the
short course season is strong fashion with 57 swimmers competing in
the meet. Every swimmer that competed
improved on times from last season while also trying new
events. Coach Darin felt the meet was a
great learning experience for the swimmers as they continued to
learn the importance of warming up and cooling down properly each
day and the steps that are necessary to swim fast as the weather
continues to cool down.
Coach Darin observed that the swimmers continued to improve on
their length off the walls in the streamline position and did an
excellent job of even pacing their races with consistency over the
course of the races. The group had
multiple swimmers in the top 8 and swim 100% best times. Congratulations to the following swimmers
for taking first place in their respective events: Chloe Mitchell (50 Back), Hannah Calton (200 Free,
100 Fly), Maddie Velez (1650 Free), Brandon Mills (50 Free, 100
& 200 Breast, 200 & 400 IM), Dylan Kubick (100 Free &
100 Fly), Chandler Pourvahidi (1650 Free, 100 & 200 Back).
This meet was the Varsity group’s first
chance to put some of their training in action and swim races that
the swimmers haven't done since last fall. The group’s main
focus for this meet was to work on implementing the stroke changes
they've been working on in practice and to try some new race
strategies. Overall, Coach Brad felt that the meet was a great
success. The group really worked hard throughout the meet and Coach
Brad saw some great things that have resulted from their training.
The 200s were very strong in the middle of the races, without much
drop off in paces. The 500s and 400 IMs were also extremely well
swum. Coach Brad was extremely proud of the way the group worked
together during warm up and warm down and he thinks everyone began
to learn how to take care of themselves over a long swim meet
weekend. Coach Brad thinks that the lessons the group learned will
be extremely valuable moving forward in future meets and he is
excited to see all of the success the group will have. Some
highlights from the meet included Shelby Rivas' first 500 freestyle
(5:48) and Matt Zerweck's 400 IM (a :30 second drop!). There were a
lot of other great swims as well, so congrats to everyone!
Congratulations to everyone that competed at
the swim meet. The Coaching Staff is very proud of the teams
performance and is very excited about the upcoming season.
The staff sees this event as a great springboard to the remainder
of the short course season!
