Canby Gators Start Season with a Win!

The Canby Gators started the season at the Tom Owen Memorial Invitational put on by Yawama Swim Team of Sherwood at Linfield College in McMinnville on October 17 and 18. Eight teams were in attendance and Canby finished first in team points. First place Canby 508 points, 2nd Forest Grove 488, 3rd Newport, 4th Yawama, 5th Team Eugene, 6th Albany, 7th Blue Dolphins and 8th Stayton. The Canby Gators also had eight swimmers qualify for state, had 19 individuals score individually and finished first in nine relays.

Canby Swimmers earning state qualifying times were: Michael Hargitt in the 100 back, 400 IM and 100 breast. Kaitlyn Hester in the 50 back, 100 back, 50 free, 50 fly and the 100 fly. Dean Mischell finished with a state time in the 100 breaststroke. Noah Norris qualified in the 500 free, 100 back, 100 free, 100 fly and 100 breast. Casey O’Brien finished with state times in the 100 fly and 100 breast. Samantha Smith qualified for state in the 100 free and 100 fly. Zach Scroggy earned A times in all six swims, the 50 back, 100 back, 50 free, 50 fly, 50 breast and 100 breaststroke. Finishing with her first state qualifying times ever, was Alisha Issa. She earned state times in the 25 fly and 25 free.   

Earning all best times at the meet for Canby were: Halley Becker, Erika Berger, Sasha Berger, Brandon Berthrong, Savannah Cruthers, Samantha Ingle, Alisha Issa, Rachel McKenzie, Erin Meredith, Madeline Meredith, Dean Mischell, Amanda Moses, Sarah Norris, Alex Olson, Amy Sanftleben, and Dane Yu. Canby also had other swimmers that finished with over half best times and they were, Emma Vandecovering, Jessica Thompson, Zach Scroggy, Veronica Norris, Wesley Norris, Olivia McKenzie and Kaitlyn Hester. Kylie Oster finished with a great swim in the 100 back and the 500 free.  

Swimmers earning points for the Canby Swim Club by scoring individually were: Bryn Baker finished 7th in the 25 back , 25 fly and 5th in the 25 breast. Brandi Beko was 8th in the 100 fly, 7th in the 100 back , 100 free, 3rd in the 500 free and 2nd in the 400 IM. Jessica Broberg finished 7th in the 100 fly. Kelsye Coyle was 8th in the 500 free, 5th in the 100 free and 2nd in the 100 back. Cole DeRisio finished with 6th in the 50 free, 5th in the 50 back and 4th in the 50 breast. Michael Hargitt was 7th in the 100 free, 6th in the 100 fly, 5th in the 100 breast, 3rd in the 500 free, 2nd in the 400 IM and 1st in the 100 back. Michael Haring finished with a 7th in the 50 free, 5th in the 50 fly and 4th in the 50 back and 50 breast. Kaitlyn Hester was 3rd in the 50 fly, 50 back and 2nd in the 50 free and 50 breast. Kylie Hester finished in 7th in the 25 free and 5th in the 25 back. Samantha Ingle swam to 7th in the 50 fly, 50 back and 6th in the 50 breast. Alisha Issa was 3rd in the 25 breast, 2nd in the 25 free and 1st in the 25 back and 25 fly. Erin Meredith finished 7th in the 25 breast. Madeline Meredith was 5th in the 50 fly. Dean Mischell finished in 5th in the 400 IM, 4th in the 100 free, and 3rd in the 100 breast. Amanda Moses was 6th in the 25 back, 25 free, 5th in the 25 fly and 4th in the 25 breast. Austin Moses finished 9th in the 50 fly. Casey O’Brien was 7th in the 400 IM, 3rd in the 100 back, 2nd in the 100 free, 100 fly and 1st in the 100 breaststroke. Spencer Polack finished 6th in the 100 back, 5th in the 100 free, 500 free, and 4th in the 100 fly. Samantha Smith was 2nd in the 100 breast and finished first in all the other events. She was first in the 500 free, 100 back, 100 free, 400 IM, and the 100 fly. Zach Scroggy finished 1st in the 50 back, 50 fly, 50 breast and the 50 free. Canby also finished first in 9 of the 12 relays they entered. The other three relays finished second, third and fourth. The only reason they had a second place relay in the 8 and under girls 100 free relay is because Canby finished first and second in those relays with swimmers, Kylie Hester, Amanda Moses, Jessi Thompson, Erin Meredith, Erika Berger, Sasha Berger, Savannah Cruthers and Alisha Issa.
