Marlins compete in Vacaville

Swimmers from the Sierra Marlins traveled to Vacaville for a day of competition on Saturday, October 24th, 2009.  In a split session meet with the 10 & under swimmers in the morning and the 11 & up swimmers in the afternoon, the Marlins displayed some great swimming from all of the groups involved in the meet.

Congratulations to all the Developmental and Mini Marlin Swimmers who participated in the Vacaville meet! Coach Erica was pleased to see so many faces early in the morning.  The Developmental and Mini’s are consistently improving on warming up as a group.  The swimmers are getting better on knowing what to do and what to expect during warm ups at a meet.  It can get a little tough in the pool with all those kids but they are constantly improving.   One of the biggest accomplishments Coach Erica saw that day was the effort put forth on backstroke flip turns.  The Developmental group had been working on turns leading up to the meet and they were a huge success!  Everyone who swam 50 back completed a backstroke flip turn successfully and Coach Erica was so proud.  As for the Mini Marlins, Kellen Jones was the only one that day and he did a great job representing his group.  Congrats to Kellen Jones on winning the 6 and under 50 back and 25 fly.  Congrats to Ilyas Kiziloglu on winning the 25 breast for the 8 and under age group.

The Black/Red group swam an impressive morning session with a number of swimmers turning in best times.  Lauren Bonzell and Jennifer Lathrop each went  4/4 best times at this meet.  Great job to Grant Thompson who had a successful showing in his first ever USS meet! McKenna Peterson looked very strong in her first 200 Breaststroke.  The 10 year old girls continued to show their strength with Chloe Miller, Allena Thompson, and Delaney Down placing 1,2,3 in the 50 Fly, 50 Free, and 100 Back.  Nico Dolley and Justin Lehr in the 9 year old boys division, and Gary Woo in the 10 year old boys division had some great top three finishes in all of their events.  Nico Dolley won all of his 9 year old events at Vacaville.

The focus for the Junior group and the Pre-Senior group at the Vacaville meet was speed of the swimmers turns.  Their plan of attack was to see how fast they could get in and out of each wall on the flip turns and the open turns.  All of the swimmers did a tremendous job of making the changes and attacking the walls throughout the day of racing.  The two groups had 96% of the swimmers achieve a best time(s).  Congratulations to Kayla Rios (200 Fly, 200 IM), Nicholas Rodriguez (200 IM), Lauren Fitzgerald (500 Free) and Chandler Pourvahidi (200 Fly, 200 Back, 500 Free, 100 Free) for winning their respective events.    Chloe Mitchell (200 Free, 500 Free) and Kayla Rios (200 IM, 200 Fly) earned new Far Western Cuts.  The following swimmers all achieved new Arizona Cuts:  Darvesh Gorhe (200 IM), Gunnar Mattson (200 Br, 100 Back, 200 IM), Breezy Johnson (100 Back), Everett Conrad (200 Breast) and Brett Emery (100 Free).
