On Sunday,
October 25th, 2009, the Sierra Marlins and Arden Hills
met for their annual dual meet. This
year the meet had the added benefit of including DeAnza Cupertino
(DACA) swim team. The tri-meet proved
to be a very competitive affair with all of the teams displaying
some great swimming!
Seventeen
swimmers from the Developmental and Mini Marlin groups participated
in the Tri meet with Arden Hills and DACA, where they continued to
focus on turns and streamlines. Divya Bhat and Hannah Blum
participated in their first meet as Marlins, while Mara Allen,
Sierra Crews and Tami Rodriguez made the jump from 25 to 50 yards
for the very first time. Susmita Bagchi, Cassidy Jones, Anna
Sangraw, Matthew Dolley, and Kyle Garcia each made an impressive
improvement in at least one event. Abhi Bagchi, Kyle Lehr, Sophie
Miller, Jennifer Thompson, and Katelyn Yule all showed how hard
they had been working on each of their strokes. However, the
stars of the group were Ilyas Kiziloglu, with significant drops in
the 50 Free, 50 Back and his first A time in the 50 Breast, and
Kevin Mitchell, with a significant drop in the 50 Breast and his
first A time in the 50 Fly.
On Sunday we
joined the entire Marlins team to participate in the Tri Meet with
Arden Hills and DACA. Our post warm-up Black/Red “Go
Marlins” cheer was filled with a lot of energy and hinted at
the great swims to come. The B/R
group had several swimmers who had all best times at this
meet. Congratulations to Nikita Bhat,
Joe Gocke, Jennifer Lathrop, Sarah Dolley, Chloe Miller, Nicolo
Quarante, and Asia Wong for going 3/3 best times at this meet. Jonathan Chu had a strong showing in his
final meet as an 8/under with two new SNRT times.
The Junior group
and Pre-Senior group continued on their theme of fast turns for the
meet. This time the group added speed
with technique trying to make the turns not only fast but
efficient. The swimmers speed in and
out of the walls continued with their streamlines being longer and
faster off the wall. With the groups
faster turns and walls the swimmers had a number of new cuts: Sectionals – Brittany Bean (200 Fly);
Junior Olympics – Lauren Ahnell (100 Bk), Samantha Hao (200
IM), Emily Peters (100 Fr, 100 Br), Sarah Robbins (100 Br), Ellie
Velez (100 Br), Darvesh Gorhe (100 Bk), Alexus Hewitt (200 IM),
Kyle Peterson (200 Bk, 200 Br), Katelin Staab (200 Br); Arizona
– Ellie Velez (100 Bk), Darvesh Gorhe (100 Bk), Marcello
Quarante (100 Fl, 200 IM), Taylor Lehr (200 Fr), Kyle Peterson (200
Bk, 200 Br), Ryan Whelan (200 Fr); Far Westerns – Adam Banks
(200 Fr, 200 IM), Bret Bonzell (200 Br) and David Ke (200 Fl). Congratulations to Kayla Rios who took
1st place in the 11 & 12 100 Fly.
This meet was a
great opportunity for some of the new Varsity swimmers on the team
to have a chance to swim in their first meet. The main focus for
the Varsity group was to work on honing race strategy and implement
stroke changes in a meet situation. Overall, the meet was a good
one, with several Marlins swimming best times. Among those
competing in their first meet, Lauren Young also swam her first
ever 200 in a meet, competing in the 200 IM and the 200 freestyle.
Daniel Fong also swam in his first meet as a Marlin, and raced in
the 200 breast and the 200 free. Congrats to these Marlins on
competing in their first meet!
In addition,
several Marlins also went best times at the meet. Matt Zerweck and
Shelby Rivas swam best times in the 200 IM. Josh Church swam a best
time in the 200 back, and Shelby Rivas swam her first ever 200 back
and qualified for the Arizona meet in December! Congrats Shelby on
a great 200 back. The varsity group has been training very strongly
the past few weeks, and this meet provided plenty of evidence of
great progress. Those who didn't swim best times did a great job
working on pacing their races and were very close to their best
times. I am proud of all of the efforts given at this meet and am
looking forward to great swims at the Gobbler and in December! Keep
up the great work.
From the senior
group, Andy Cunningham had a terrific day with 3 best times
including an amazing 9 second drop in the 200 fly. Corbin Gomez was
on fire with 2 best times. Luke Keffer had a great 200 back
improving over 3 seconds. Mikayla
discovered a new event with an 8 second drop in the 200 fly and
also had a 3rd place finish in the 200 free.
Other top 3
finishers included Josh Choi (1st 200 breast), Weston
Landre (3rd place 200 back), Sophie Weber
(3rd place 200 IM) and Alex Whitford (2nd
place 200 fly).
