From Coach Brian
The swimmers are doing well getting back into weights, stretching, abs and swimming main sets. We will be continuing as always during the beginning of each season to stress good practice habits. The main points that we will be stressing are consistency in attendance, consistency of effort, attention to detail and taking pride in doing things fully and correctly (no cheating yourself!). Please stress these things to your child as well when the opportunity arises when discussing swimming at home.
From Coach John
We are going to begin implementing our Life Skills starting this week and one of the first things we will go over is lane etiquette for our swimmers…both at practice and at meets. It’s very important that our Sharks carry themselves in a way that is representative of our overall mission and the coaching staff will work to promote those ideals from the very start of a swimmer’s career with the Sharks. It’s been a great start to the season and everyone seems to be getting back into the swing of things. We will continue working on correctly developing all four strokes, but more endurance focused sets will be implemented into practices over the next few weeks. Keep up the hard work!
From Coach Dan
Hello Shark’s and Shark Parents. We have a few meets coming up, and more can be found on our website. If you are wondering about what meet your swimmer should participate in it is always a good idea to ask a coach. There will be plenty of opportunities for your young athlete to compete in the pool this summer, and coaches love seeing a ton of Sharks at each meet. Just a reminder to Hammerhead parents—we do have practice on Sundays if you are able to attend.
Friday Practice Times Changed
For all Mako, Leopard, and Tiger Sharks, we are going to be switching around the practice times for Fridays due to the number of swimmers we have in the water and the need to make sure we have proper lane space for our swimmers. It’s great to see so many Sharks in the water, and we hope it continues for the remainder of the Long Course season! Below are the changes:
Makos: 5:30-6:30pm (switched from 4:45-5:45pm)
Leopards: 5:30-6:45pm (switched from 5:45-7:00pm)
Tigers: 5:15-6:45pm (switched from 5:30-7:00pm)
*please note this is the same schedule for all three groups as their Monday/Wednesday times…now practice times are identical on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.

It is very important for swimmers to bring the proper equipment for their practice. If you are not sure what equipment your swimmer should bring please visit our website and click on the “parent information” tab near the top, or click this link: http://www.wtrcsharks.net/SubTabGeneric.jsp?team=oswtrc&_stabid_=16913
Please remember that coming to practice without a suit or goggles is like going to school without a pencil and paper!
More Info: Kroger Neighborhood Rewards Program – New Program Effective May 1st
As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, Kroger is changing their neighborhood rewards program. We are still trying to determine how this will work and truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we learn the new ropes. This is our current understanding of various changes to the program.
- Rewards will be credited quarterly not monthly as they have been in the past.
- The rebate back to the team (previously a consistent 4%) will now be based on the % of our total purchases into the program from all the groups participating in the program. This may be less than 4%, with program caps it may be more. It will change from quarter to quarter as our percentage of total purchases changes relative to all purchases made by all non-profit organizations.
- Each family is capped at receiving $300 team credit per quarter.
- You may connect family and friends to the sharks on your behalf. They need to go in and tie their account to our organization number. If you do this, you must provide our Kroger coordinator, Annette Quarin (email@example.com) with the name and Kroger Plus number of the family who is helping to fundraise on your behalf.
It would be extremely helpful if all team members would connect their Kroger Plus cards to the Sharks and then give us some time to see how this program plays out in the real world. We will need a few “quarters” to get a better understanding of the new system. The first quarter is May-July of 2012.
TO USE THE KROGER COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM:
Kroger is no longer utilizing “gift cards” as they have done in the past. Instead, all purchases will be tracked through your Kroger Plus Number/ Card. That being said, you need to register your Kroger Plus Card and connect it to the Sharks Swim team to receive credit for purchases made at Kroger. See below directions from Kroger for registering your Kroger Plus Card with the Sharks Swim Team. Our Organization number is 81740.
Register online at krogercommunityrewards.com . Be sure to have your Kroger Plus card handy and register your card with your organization after you sign up. If a member does not yet have a Kroger Plus card, please let them know that they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger.
· Click on Sign In/Register
· Most participants are new online customers, so they must click on SIGN UP TODAY in the ‘New Customer?’ box.
· Sign up for a Kroger Rewards Account by entering zip code, clicking on favorite store, entering your email address and creating a password, agreeing to the terms and conditions
· You will then get a message to check your email inbox and click on the link within the body of the email.
· Click on My Account and use your email address and password to proceed to the next step.
· Click on Edit Kroger Community Rewards information and input your Kroger Plus card number.
· Update or confirm your information.
· Enter NPO number or name of organization, select organization from list and click on confirm.
· To verify you are enrolled correctly, you will see your organization’s name on the right side of your information page.
· REMEMBER, purchases will not count for your group until after your member(s) register their card(s).
· Do you use your phone number at the register? Call 800-576-4377, select option 4 to get your Kroger Plus card number.
Members must swipe their registered Kroger Plus card or use the phone number that is related to their registered Kroger Plus card when shopping for each purchase to count. If you have additional questions please contact The Kroger Gift Services office, Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. at 800-294-4428 or 513-782-3450. You can also contactAnnette Quarin, who is the WTRC Shark Group Rep at Quarin4@aol.com.
By now all Shark swimmers in the water need to be registered. The Rec Center allows us 2 large group trial weeks per year, one per season for our swim team--one for Short Course and one for Long Course. That free trial week (no obligations either pass or fee related) ended last week. Due to liability concerns all swimmers must now be registered and approved if they are in the water.
Registrations for Long Course season, both full session and 7-Week session, have been going very well. We will be swimming at record numbers for the team for the Long Course season, a great testament to our individual swimmers, parents, coaches and the efforts of our volunteer board.
15 new swimmers to the team will be swimming with us during the Long Course season. This is great news! We’re always looking to build the team and our current families are the best form of advertising and recruiting that we have. The success of our team will speak for itself through performance in the water and assist as a recruiting tool. However, our families’ encouragment of potential future Sharks to give this sport a try is invaluable and we certainly appreciate what you do for us in this regard!!
WRTC Complete Pass
All Shark swimmers are required to have a valid “Complete Pass” to the Rec Center. Additional information regarding Rec Center entrance and pass types can be found at:
We maintain a listing of all swimmers and with their type of passes and expiration date. The Rec Center comes to us anytime that there are issues or concerns regarding passes. Here are a couple very easy to follow suggestions to avoid any problems entering the facility.
· Always have your pass with you when you enter the Rec Center, Swimmers must swipe their card upon entry to the facility
· Ensure that your pass is current. Unfortunately, there isn’t an expiration date on the cards (yet). However, the Rec Center system will alert the individual and front desk staff if a swiped pass is expired. This will be the reminder that it’s time to renew.
Do You Have Questions Related to the Team?
We’re excited to announce 3 new volunteers to our Parent Working Groups. If you have any type of question related to the team that isn’t specific to on-deck or in the water performance, then the group parents are the first place you should be going for answers. The coaches are the subject matter expects for the on-deck and water performance questions and our Parent Working Group is the front line for everything else. If these folks can’t directly answer your questions, they know where to turn within our board to get these answers. Here are our current Parent Working Group members:
Lemon Shark and Hammerhead Shark – (New) Patti Pickrel firstname.lastname@example.org
Mako Shark – Christy Spaulding email@example.com
Leopard Shark – (New) Jeremy Hill firstname.lastname@example.org
Tiger Shark – Shara Taylor email@example.com
Great White and National – (New) Madeline Carlsen firstname.lastname@example.org
Practice Habits and Attendance
Similar to every other sport, good practice habits directly correspond to performance in the pool. This is especially important to goal attainment and level progressions within the Sharks. As a general guideline, we’ve outlined minimum practice standards designed in a manner to give our athletes a way to improve and succeed with regular progression throughout their swimming career. These are only minimums, and it’s always encouraged to take advantage of every opportunity. If you have any questions at all regarding practice, please contact a coach.
Lemon Shark - Swimmers should make at least 2 practices per week out 3 offered
Hammerhead Shark: Swimmers should attend 3 practices offered
Mako Shark - Swimmers should make 3 out of 4 practices offered
Leopard Shark - Swimmers should make 4 out of 6 practices and 2 out of 2 drylands
Tiger Shark - Swimmers should make 5 out of 6 practices and 2 out of 2 drylands
Great White Shark and National - Swimmers in the Great White Group are required to attend a minimum of 5 of 6 swimming workouts per week. In order to swim at their optimal levels, Great White swimmers should attend all 6 swimming workouts as well as both dryland workouts per week. Swimmers in the National Group should strive to attend all workouts, including mornings as well as dryland workouts. A 90% attendance requirement is in effect for this group.
Practice participation is recorded and tracked. If you have additional questions regarding group levels, there’s a great tool on our website at:

How Do I Sign My Swimmer into a Meet
There is a great video tutorial for understanding how to sign your swimmer into a meet.
Sign into your account. Once logged in:
· Click on My Account
· Then click on My Tutorials
· Click on here to launch video player
· Click on the Understanding Your Event tab
· Click on Parent Meet Entry
If you have comments for the coaches please leave them in the comment section when you select your events. It is very difficult for the coaches to toggle between e-mail and the meet entry system so this is the best place to leave them input about which events you would like your swimmer to swim or which sessions your swimmer is available.
Understanding Your Monthly Billing
As the season continues, remember there are great video tutorials on-line. To access the Understanding your billing tutorial, follow these instructions:
Sign into your account. Once logged in:
