Winskill swimmers got off to a great start at the 2009 Canadian Age-Group Championships in Montreal on Wednesday.
In the first heat of the afternoon, Karyn Jewell (15) successfully defended her 2008 National Championship in the 1500m with a huge, 20 second victory over the second place swimmer. Jewell’s victory was her second in two years in the event, she also placed 10th in the country at the World Championship Trials last week in the same pool.
Luke Reilly (13) threw his hat into the scoring ring with a PB of 17:30 in his 1500m freestyle. Luke’s time was a best clocking and moved him from 9th place coming into the meet into 7th after the dust settled. Luke was the 5th place Canadian in the event after a strong team from Baja California took two of the top spots. Luke’s swim also qualified him for next winter’s Western Canada Championships in Saskatoon, SK in February.
Also posting a best time performance was Meghan Kwiatkowski (13) which ended her up in 5th place, maintaining her position from both the 2008 championships, and the entry sheets.
First time Age-Group National competitor Sarah Yeo (12), Gabe Lee (13), Jon Kraft (15), and Brittany Mageau (14) also made their mark in the 1500m Freestyle! Jumping from 23rd position into 17th, Yeo slashed 24 seconds from her best time. Likewise Lee moved up from 39th place to 30th with his 10 second best time while Kraft cracked the 18-minute barrier, climbing from 31st to 24th place, with his 10 second best time.
After Wednesday’s timed final 1500’s Winskill Dolphins currently sit 5th place in the overall club rankings with 76 points from 1 gold medal and 3 finals swims.
Competition continues Thursday through Sunday with the heats starting daily at 8am EDT and the finals at 5:30pm EDT.
