April 13, 2009
This is the MAC News for Monday, April 13th.
Don't forget, we are still on a modified practice schedule for one more day. Senior Red, Black, and White are finishing up their only practice for the day as I type. Age Group II will swim from 9:00-10:30 and Senior Prep and Masters from 5:30-6:30 in the bubble. Age Group I will swim in the indoor pool from 4:30-6:15. Practices will return to normal tomorrow. Remember, there will be no Senior Prep and Masters practice on Wednesday due to a coach's meeting.
The meet notice for the 2009 Swim Like a FISH Invitational scheduled for June 13-14 at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA has been posted on the bulletin board next to the baby pool. This meet notice is NOT available on-line currently so please check the bulletin board for details. The meet is open to swimmers who are 9 years old and older. There are no qualifying times. There is a $5.00 surcharge per swimmer and individual events are $7.00 each. Each swimmer may swim up to 5 events per day. Make checks payable to MAC for either one day - $40 or two days - $75. All entries, along with a check to cover the fees, are due to the meet entry folder by 12:00 pm Saturday, April 18th. If you have any questions as to whether your child should attend this meet, please speak to your child's coach.
I recently notified the MAC Board that I am ready to hand over my daily duties sending out the MAC News. What follows is a letter from our President about what the positions involve.
Liz Brabson has asked to pass the torch of her daily MAC duties. She has continued to support our team, even without any swimmers in the water, during the past year. Liz --thank you so very much for your dedication and the support you provided to our club. Your optimism, knowledge of team history, links to the Maryland swimming community and heartfelt celebration for all our swimmers' successes will be missed. We all appreciate your contribution to MAC! Liz has served as the communication hub of MAC via the MAC News. On a daily basis, she has gathered information from coaches, Board members, and other members of the community and dispersed it with thoroughness, accuracy, and good humor. Some stories are also posted to the MAC website. Liz also imports the results for our team after every meet, and distributes them to the people who update team records on the website, submit articles to local papers, and maintain the team data base.
Here are the specific requirements to handle the MAC news and reporting of meet results. For the MAC News, the ideal candidate would have 15-30 minutes every morning to type up and submit the MAC News through the website, call the hotline and read it over the phone, and occasionally post items to the website. This person should also have access to a computer during the day for last minute updates for practice cancellations and the like. Whoever takes this job needs to have a "big picture" outlook and a focus on the issues involving the entire club.
Concerning meet results--this would involve importing results after every meet into Team Manager, and running a report checking for new team records which are passed on to Terri Kolovich so she may update the website. Other responsibilities include running a results report for just our team (removing any finisher below 8th place, and sending that on to Deb Reynolds for submission to the local papers) and sending the entire meet results file to Ed Goundry for inclusion in the team's Team Manager. The ideal candidate for this job would have Team Manager experience (although it would not be hard to teach someone how to run the reports). It requires about 30 minutes after each meet.
There are a few ways in which these jobs could be shared. First, two different people should fill the positions of MAC News and Meet Results. In addition, someone could volunteer to record the MAC News to the Hotline number each day. If you are interested in helping out, please contact both Liz (email@example.com) and John Borgersen (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Again, we thank Liz for her many years of support for MAC.
Don't forget, RSVPs for the end of the year banquet are due to the Banquet folder by TOMORROW. Questions should be directed to Helene Williams at email@example.com at 301-607-6475. Anyone interested in contributing pictures for the slide show to be shown at the banquet should e-mail them to Terri Bush at firstname.lastname@example.org place them in the Bush folder by Monday, April 20th.
Please be aware that in early May, Hood will be performing maintenance on the outdoor pool and MAC practices from May 7th - May 16th will be moved to either Frederick High or Middletown High. More information will be posted soon. The bubble will be coming down that Saturday, May 9th, so be sure to reserve that date on your calendar now as we will need everyone's help.
