Safety Training for Swim Coaches Update

Hello and Happy New Year!

We’re pleased to announce an administrative update to the Safety Training for Swim Coaches suite of courses! This update will not impact course content, but will streamline the course delivery process and eliminate the requirement for Red Cross Providers to request blended learning offerings.

Effective January 2016, the Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification requirement can be met through a two-step process:

Step 1: Safety Training for Swim Coaches Online Content:
Individuals who are interested in taking Safety Training for Swim Coaches should visit redcross.org and register for Safety Training for Swim Coaches - Online Content Only (HSSAQU303).

Step 2: In-Water Skills Verification
National coaching governing bodies require swim coaches to demonstrate in-water skills. The following Red Cross courses meet the skills verification requirement for these organizations:

  1. Lifeguarding
  2. Shallow Water Lifeguarding
  3. Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding
  4. Safety Training for Swim Coaches In-Water Skills Session

Coaches who do not hold a current certification in one of the above Lifeguarding courses must participate in the  Safety Training for Swim Coaches - In-Water Skills Session  (full or review course)  after completing the Safety Training for Swim Coaches - Online Content Only course.
See the chart below to determine which training option is required based on current certification status:
