Gardner High School's
Swim Team won their 16th State Division I Championship Title on
Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Harvard University's Blodgett
Pool. Only seven swimmers competed for the title and they
went into the meet not favored to win. However, before the
meet began Coach Don Lemieux inspired the girls to believe in
themselves and they embraced the challenge! Their final score
was 207 points with defending state champion Lincoln-Sudbury
finishing in second place with a score of 139.5.
The team was comprised
of: Captains Jane Ehret (GMSC swim team member) and Venessa
L'Heureux, Caitlin Reilly, Katie Cornetta, Taylor Strachan (GMSC
swim team member), Sarah Robertson (GMSC swim team member) and
Gabby Surrette.
The girls' motto going
into the meet was "race with a vengeance" and they did exactly
that. Every member had life time best in all of their
swims. Jane Ehret captured 1st in the 200 yard individual
medley, 3rd in the 100 butterfly, 1st in the 200 medley relay, and
1st in the 400 freestyle relay. Taylor Strachan placed 1st in
the 100 yard butterfly and became the first freshman from Gardner
High School to make All American with a time of 56.29 and almost
broke the meet record of 56.07 set by former GHS and GMSC swimmer
Erica Meissner in 2006. In addition, Taylor took 1st in the
200 medley relay, 1st in the 400 freestyle relay and 4th in the 100
breaststroke. Sarah Robertson placed 5th in the 500
freestyle, 4th in the 200 individual medley, 1st in the 200 medley
relay, and 5th in the 200 freestyle relay.
Congratulations to the
Gardner High School swim team for making Gardner proud!
