For the first time
ever in an open water competition in this continent, coaches and
parents will be able to board spectator boats and watch the action
up close. They will not have to peer through binoculars or wait
long periods to wonder who is leading or who is in the lead
pack. Interaction between the athletes and their coaches at
the feeding stations, the physical scrum around the turn buoys, and
the warning whistles and yellow flags given by the referee will be
within easy viewing from the spectator boats. The National
Championships will feature no-exhaust, no-wake gondola boats that
will follow the women’s and men’s lead packs at a
close, but safe, distance.
Because the
championships are open to qualified athletes from any country this
year, experienced FINA World Cup swimmers from Canada, Azerbaijan
and Egypt have already committed to the race so the event will
definitely have an international flavor to it.
Additionally, the
new Open Water Pursuit races will be an interesting addition after
the 5K race on Sunday, June 6th.
Teams of 3-4 swimmers will race either one (2K) or two (4K)
loops around Marine Stadium. The swimmers will start, swim
and finish together as they draft, position and pace off of one
another in an aquatic peloton. Each team will be set off in a
randomly selected staggered start. The official time will be
the time all the team members cross the finish.
