2011 Speed Grand Challenge

Speedo Grand Challenge

Four days of sunny 70 degree weather, nice.  Racing in one of the best venues in the country, also nice.  A chance to see and compete against some of the greatest swimmers in the world, priceless.

This was the opportunity taken by 17 BCST swimmers this past weekend, as they traveled south to Irvine, CA to compete in the Speedo Grand Challenge.  This traditional meet hosted by Irvine NOVAQUTICS brings swimmers from all over the world to race each other in the incredibly fast and deep early season senior meet.

The top club teams in California like PASA, DACA, Mission Viejo, NOVA, and NCA were all in attendance, along with college club teams from UC Berkeley, Stanford, USC, UCLA, UCSB, and UNLV.

Some of the great female swimmers who participated wereYulia Efimova, Jessica Hardy, Katinka Hosszu, Katerine Savardm, and Julia Smit.  Not to be out done the guys filed had Nathan Adrian, Damir Dugonjic, Chad LaTourette, Jason LezakEric Shanteau, and Tom Shields There were other great’s there as well, and the BCST swimmers relished the exposure.

BCST wasn’t idle or merely gawking at our competition, we were players as well as 4 swimmers were able to make it back to finals.  Kim Williams broke two BCST records as she managed to place 20th in the 100 Breast (1:16.02), and 14th in the 400 IM (5:02.06).  Kalena Laurent placed 15th in the 200 Fly (2:21.98), and Steve Sholdra placed 19th in the 200 Fly (2:12.48).

Despite the sun burns, this was a great experience for all involved and I feel this will only temper the swimmers and make them much better as we approach our championships.

A special thanks to Cynthia Hallowell who chaperoned and assisted the swimmers with all their needs.
