Elks Win Big at Larry Lyons

The Centerville Boys' and Girls' Swim and Dive teams had an excellent showing at the 2013 Larry Lyons Invitational at Sycamore High School on January 5th.
The Boys team continued their dominance with their fifth straight victory. Sophomore Noah Hickey and Junior Brad Hornbostel got the meet off to a strong start with 1st and 2nd place finishes in the Boys 1 Meter diving. Senior Josh Brooks followed up the early diving success with 1st place finishes in the 200 IM and 500 Freestyle. Brooks was also named "Swimmer of the Meet" by the Head Coaches of all participating teams. Rounding out the other top three male finishers were Senior Tyler Fullington, 1st Place 100 Butterfly; Junior Stephen Quarin, 3rd Place 50 Freestyle; Sophomore Nathaniel Lowry, 2nd Place 200 IM and 100 Breast; and Freshman Chris Quarin, 3rd Place 100 Freestyle. A 3rd place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with the team of Curtis, Lowry, Beinhart, Sparks; a 2nd place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay by Fullington, Curtis, C. Quarin, and Brooks, and a 2nd place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay by Brooks, Fullington, Lowry, and C. Quarin, all helped the boys claim their 5th straight Larry Lyons title.
The Lady Elks pulled out a narrow victory over perennial powerhouse, Ursuline, for the first time since 2009. Junior Katie Polk and Senior Olivia Lehman gave the girl swimmers a 25 point lead before the first swimming event with 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the Girls 1 Meter diving. Sophomore Grace Hoffmann put on a strong showing with a 1st place finish in the 200 IM and a 2nd place finish in the 100 Backstroke. Senior Marisa Pulaski, 3rd Place 200 IM, 2nd Place 100 Breast; Junior Emma Curtis, 3rd Place 50 Freestyle; Sophomores Nicole Swartz, 1st Place 500 Freestyle, and Emma King, 3rd Place 500 Freestyle, as well as Freshman Maddison Eckley, 3rd Place 200 Freestyle, all placed in the Top 3 in their respective events. A 3rd place finish in the 200 Medley Relay by Hoffmann, Pulaski, Sparks and Curtis; a 2nd place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay by Curtis, Butkus, Stout, and King; and a 2nd place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay by King, Hoffmann, Eckley and Butkus, solidified the girls first team title since 2009.
The Elks Swim & Dive team will be back in action this Friday, January 11th at the Washington Township Recreation Center hosting Beavercreek and recognizing the team’s senior swimmer athletes.
