A Huge Team & New Coaches Everywhere!
Our team is approaching 270 members. This is almost 30 more than last year and about 25 more than we expected. With over 80 - 8U swimmers and almost 70 - 10U participants, our workouts are getting crowded. Starting Thursday our 5-6 year old swimmers will have their own 30 minutes practice, which will help out our 7-8 year old practice. We’ll try and have 5 or 6 coaches on duty for both the 8U and 10U workouts as well.
Morning workout times are as follows (starting this Thursday) –
13-18 7:15 – 8:15 AM
11-12 8:15 – 9:00 AM
9-10 9:00 – 9:45 AM
7-8 9:45 – 10:25 AM
5-6 10:30 – 11:00 AM
A bit about your coaches –
Matt Edwards – Grew up swimming at Aqua Club and is still here. Also teaches Band at Madrona K8 in Edmonds and runs a private music studio out of his basement. Matt has coached at Aqua Club for over 25 years.
Pete Colella – Grew up swimming at Sand Point and swam competitively for UW. Still owns an SSSL record after all of these years! Pete has coached at Aqua Club for 8 years. He also runs a graphic design company in his spare time.
Jayme Swalin – Grew up swimming at Aqua Club and swam competitively for The University of Pacific. Jayme has also coached summer league swimming in California. This is her first year coaching with Aqua Club.
Rachel Marinos – Rachel grew up at View Ridge and also worked there for almost 30 years. She has also been a head coach in the Mid-Lakes league. We’re glad to pull Rachel out of retirement to join us at Aqua Club!
Mike McCloskey – Grew up at the Aqua Club and was the head coach back in the late 1980’s. Mike started the swim teams at both Seattle Prep and Archbishop Murphy. Both teams went on to win the state championship under his guidance. Mike is currently the Director of Development at Archbishop Murphy.
Sydney Berkman – Sydney grew up at the Aqua Club and has taught swim lessons and guarded for six years. This is her first season coaching with us. She currently attends the University of Washington.
Claire McCloskey – Claire is in her 13th year on the Aqua Club swim team. We look forward to her energy and enthusiasm as she starts her coaching career with us! Claire will be attending St. Martin’s College in the fall.
Casey Colella – Casey starting his coaching career as well this year. He will be swimming at UC Santa Cruz this fall. We’re excited to have him on board!
Sheridan Beach Meet & Home “Mini-Meet”
Our 5, 6, and 7-year old swimmers and our newer 9,10,11,and 12-year old swimmers may find our “mini-meet” to be a great way to start the season. It starts at 6:00pm and should end by 8:00pm. Kids should arrive by 5:45pm for warm-up. All participants will have the opportunity to swim up to four events, including relays. We’ll have ribbons on snacks as well. Please let the coaches know if you have a preference for which meet you would like to attend. Final decisions should be made by Friday, June 25.
Swimmers attending the Thursday away meet at Sheridan Beach will have 2-4 events (including relays), depending on the numbers of swimmers in their age group. The meet will run from 5:15pm until around 10:00pm.
Race Classes/Swim Lessons
Many swim team members still participate in either swim lessons or race classes. While we do try and cover all of the strokes and skills in workout, the smaller class sizes of our lesson program (and our great instructors) can really make a difference. Check with any of the coaches or office staff about which lesson your child should sign up for. Register for lessons at the pool office.

Tie Dye Party
Tuesday’s planned tie-dye party may have to be rescheduled. It’s hard to tye-die if the shirts aren’t here! We will keep you posted on any changes.
Volunteering at Meets
We need your help! If your child is swimming, please plan on putting in some volunteer hours. We need 36 timers for each home meet, plus 20-25 additional volunteers to help with data, ribbons, officiating, and even helping guide children to the blocks. You will be able to sign up either online or at the pool. Look for the “job signup” buttons on the website next to each swim team event.
Swim Team Dues Reminder
Fees are $120 per swimmer or $275 per family. Also remember to update your SSSL paperwork and concussion form. Swimmers will not be allowed to compete in meets until the SSSL form is completed. New copies are available on the swim team website or in the office. You can email a pdf of the forms to firstname.lastname@example.org if you can’t make it down to the pool.
We’d like to “link-up” our oldest and youngest swimmers. One idea is to have some of the seniors come by the 8U & 10U practices and join in. The younger would sure get a kick out of this. We could also use the older kids as examples when we are teaching new concepts. Interested swimmers should email Coach Matt to find a day that works for everyone.
Thanks – and see you at the pool!
