The King County Aquatic Center reopens this week having finished a very large and successful capital improvement project on time. The goals met include increasing fresh air supply to the main natatorium and renovating key areas of the facility to increase energy efficiencies. The project included new ductwork over the competition pools, new high efficiency HVAC units, replacement of the pool boilers, lighting upgrades and installation of a solar photovoltaic system on the street side roof. These projects were identified as part of a comprehensive energy audit of WKCAC completed in January 2014 and were funded in part by two grants totaling $975,000 from the Washington Department of Commerce’s 2013-2015 Energy Efficiency and Solar Grants for Local Governments program.
