Competitive Swim

The Program

The team at UMLY has grown steadily from its early beginnings to a highly competitive YMCA and USA team. Our YMCA swimming program offers excellent competition at varying levels including dual meets, League championships, District Championships, State Championships, and YMCA Nationals. We are also a member of the Middle Atlantic LSC and participate in USA competition including Mini meets and Level A, B and C meets. The UMLY swim program is a year round.

The Fall is time for reviewing and teaching strokes, starts, and turns in order to "condition" swimmers for the winter season. At the end of the conditioning period, time trials are held to determine team placement and practice level for the Winter competitive season.

The winter competitive season runs from November through March (or April for those who qualify for YMCA Nationals.) Based on fall time trials, five teams are formed: Boys A, Boys B, Girls A, Girls B-North, Girls B-South. Approximately 50-60 swimmers are on each team representing ages 8 & U (Minis), 9-10 (Cadets), 11-12 (Preps), 13-14 (Juniors), 15 & Above (Seniors). As members of various Pennsylvania YMCA leagues, each UMLY team competes in variety of dual meets and divisional championships with other local YMCA swim teams of equivalent ability.

Pennsylvania Districts is a regional meet for all in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania who swim a qualifying time during the competitive season. This meet is hosted by UMLY and held at LaSalle University in Philadelphia. The top 9 individuals and top 9 relay team from Districts are eligible for Pennsylvania State Championship. This meet is held at Penn State University and includes eligible swimmers from both the Eastern and Western Districts of Pennsylvania.

YMCA Winter Nationals culminates the winter season. Swimmers who qualify compete in Florida at the YMCA Winter National Championship with other swimmers throughout the United States. The top 16 swimmers in each events are recognized as YMCA All Americans.

The Spring conditioning programs runs from April through May and prepares the swimmer for summer competition either at UMLY or at other swim clubs. Stroke improvement, starts, turns, and finishes are emphasized.

The Summer program begins in May and runs through August. After mid-June swimmers use UMLY's outdoor 50-meter pool. The dual meet program offers competition with other local YMCA and Summer swim clubs. Swimmers also participate in YMCA and USA Summer long course meets, and, as they qualify, YMCA Summer Nationals, and USA Junior and Senior Nationals. UMLY also hosts the East Field Long Course Championship.
