Game Policy

Throughout the summer season there are water polo tournaments hosted by clubs in the province. The water polo tournaments do not hold any standings except for the goal of winning the tournaments. Each region will host a regional tournament, which qualifies one team in each age group to represent their region at provincials.

Tournaments:

The goal for sunfish teams at the tournaments (excluding regionals and provincials) is for all players to get an equal amount of playing time to improve their skills. These tournaments are as valuable as practices for players to learn about the game. It is recommended to forfeit games if players will not get equal playtime. A game should not be forfeited if it is possible for players to receive reasonable play time.

Players will not receive less playing time during these tournaments based on practices attended. The tournaments hold the same value as practices. It is recommended players attend as many practices as possible to improve their skills.

Players will be asked to commit to tournaments at least a week prior to the tournament to ensure we have enough teams entered in the tournament. If there are too many players on one team then payers will not get enough time in the game. If players are late registering for a tournament, they may not be able to attend unless the team is not full (13 players).

Players must come to tournaments with the sunfish team spirit. That means to support their team and all other teams at the tournament. Poor sportsmanship will not be accepted and players who show poor sportsmanship will not play in the tournament. Any player who shows poor sportsmanship in or out of the water will be under review and require approval from the head coach and director of water polo before attending another event. These issues must be brought to the attention of the swim club head coach and director of water polo.

Regionals:

Each age group can only submit one team to regionals, this will require players to be selected to make a team. The goal of the sunfish teams at regionals is to advance to provincials. This is unlike the goal of equal play for everyone during regular season tournaments. The coaches will make sure play time is equalized during games we are winning by a reasonable margin. Following are the guidelines the coaches use in selecting the team members:

  • The head coach with recommendations from other coaches will select the best combination of players that can make the team successful.
  • All players must represent the club with good sportsmanship. This reviewed throughout the season during practices, games, social events, and interaction with team mates and interaction with other teams.
  • It is recommended that players stay within their own age group but the head coach may justify moving players up. This situation must be communicated to the director of water polo for approval and the members affected prior to the team selection being posted.
  • Team selection must be posted one week prior to regionals and provincials. Any players that will not make the selection must be notified in person by the head coach prior to the team selection being posted.
  • At regionals and provincials, not all players will get equal playing time as our goal is to advance to provincials and place as high as possible. Some players may not get much playing time if any in some games. If we are winning by a safe margin then the coaches should make sure that the weaker players get additional playing time to gain experience and may the tournament worth their time.
  • Coaches must notify the parents of the players that may not get much play time to ensure they make the best decision for their family to travel to provincials or not.
