PATRICK L. MILES holds the distinction of being the first Arkansan to win a medal in International Competition. In 1971, Patrick won the Gold Medal in the 1500m freestyle in the Pan-American Games. Patrick was the first Arkansan to qualify for Nation Competition (1969), and was also the first Arkansan to win a medal in the Nationals (1970). Patrick was “All-American” in three events, his freshman year at South Illinois University. He was an Age Group Champion in Arkansas, and a member of the Little Rock Racquet Club Dolphin Swim Team, coached by Kees Oudegeest.
