As an age group swimmer under the tutelage of Jimmy Miller, Brooks was one f the first nationally ranked swimmers in Arkansas. In 1958, prior to the recording of national age group times, Brooks’ time for the 100-yard greestly,8 and under division was unofficially the fastest in the nation. In 1960, he set a national record as a member of a 9-10 year old relay team at an Austin, Texas meet he set three pool records and was name outstanding age group swimmer. Brooks swam for McClellan High School and Hendrix College, where he continued to dominate the sport.
