2000 Matt Twillie
Matt was an Arkansas Age Group Champion from 1976-1990. In 1984, he was a National Top 16 in the 100 meter butterfly, 100 meter freestyle, and 50 meter freestyle. As a 14-year old in 1986, he made his first Senior National qualifying time, and in 1989, he was the fastest 17-year old butterflier in the nation (48.71), swimming for Little Rock Hall High School. That year he competed in Tallinn, Russia as a member of the USA Junior National Team and qualified for the Olympic Festival in 50 and 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Also in 1989, he set Arkansas high school records in the 50 freestyle (21.02) and 100 yard butterfly. He was selected as the Arkansas Gazette Athlete of the Year in 1989 and 1990. Attending Southern Methodist University, he was the 1st African –American male to win the 100 butterfly at a SEC Championship and a 1995 recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Award. He currently works as an English Teacher at Oak Grove Jr./Sr. High School and an assistant swim coach at the Little Rock Athletic Club.
