John swam competitively as an age group swimmer for the Hendrix Aquakids and the Little Rock Arkansas Dolphins and in college for Auburn University. His many swimming accomplishments include: member of the World Championship Team 1998, won silver medal in the 400 Medley Relay Team, member and Team Captain of the Auburn University National Championship Team in 1997, Member of the 200 Medley Relay Team that broke the NCAA, US Open and Meet Record in 1997. He was a member of the USA Pan Pacific team in 1997 and listed in Who’s Who in among America’s College and Universities. Hargis was a three time SEC 100 Butterfly Champion, SEC Record holder in the 100 butterfly and a 12 time college All America. He was the Arkansas Swimmer of the Year four years and a 5 time Arkansas State Champion in Butterfly and Backstroke. John was the 100 Butterfly at the Olympic Trials in 1996 and went on to win a Gold Medal at the Olympics as a member of the 400 Medley Relay.
