Kersh swam competitively as an age group swimmer for the Hendrix Aquakids and the Russelleville swim club. He swam for Arkansas Tech University as a collegiate swimmer. Kersh was three time all AIC and the AIC record holder in the 200 Freestyle. He twice qualified for the NAIA National Swimming Championships. In 1995 he qualified to swim the Lac St. Jean Marathon swim in Quebec, Canada World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation, 21 miles. He was the swimmer of the Duracraft One-Mile Lake Swim in Little Rock, Lake Norel, 1982-1984. In 1986, he swam in the World Professional Marathon Swimming Lake Memphragog Marathon, Quebec, Canada, 15 kilometers and place 6th. Swam in the Manhattan Marathon Swim 28.5 miles in 1987, 1991, and 1994. Highest finish was 6th out of 75 swimmers. In 1990, he swam Capri to Naples, Italy marathon swim 21 miles, finishing 16th place in 10 hours and 20 minutes. In 1990 he ranked 30th in the world. He placed 13th at the Seal Beach Rough Water National Championships in Los Angeles, CA. Kersh coached the Russelleville Swim Club 1987-1990 and assisted Paul Blair at the Little Rock Dolphins in the early 1980’s.
