Tom Gean began swimming at the Fort Smith Boys Club in downtown Fort Smith at age seven. He held numerous Arkansas state swimming records during his age-group swimming career. In addition, Tom held several Arkansas High School swimming records and was named Arkansas High School Swimmer of the Year his junior year by the Arkansas Gazette. He attended the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville where he was a four year letterman for the Razorback swim team. He was captain of the team his senior year. The team placed 11th at NCAAs that year. 
Tom graduated with an accounting degree from the U of A and then received his law degree from Vanderbilt University. After graduating from law school, Tom was in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia and Fort Smith. In 1996, he was elected Prosecuting Attorney for Sebastian County, Arkansas. In 2001, Tom was appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas. Tom became the Chief Legal Compliance Officer for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in 2004.
