Assistant Coaches



 

 

Along with our full-time coaches, our assistant coaches complete our  staff.  Our assistant coaches have experience coaching age group swimmers and several were accomplished swimmers themsleves.  The short bios below will tell you a bit about our assistant coaches experience, swimming background and their styles of working with swimmers.  Please feel free to contact them if you have questions about them or about your swimmer’s work with them.

 





 

 

                                                                                    

Laura Cowley 

National/Zone/State group coach

Coach Laura Cowley joined the Club Wolverine coaching staff after moving to Ann Arbor with her family in June 2008. The Cowley’s lived in Marquette, Michigan, prior to moving to Ann Arbor. Coach Laura has coached swimming for the past four years. She is a certified YMCA and USA swimming coach, and was also a certified YMCA and MHSAA swimming official.

Coach Laura’s interest in swimming began more than ten years ago watching her three children develop into capable swimmers while living in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Coach Laura and her family were fortunate enough to have been exposed to exceptional coaching/mentoring from the beginning of their swimming experience.

Sally Anderson

National/Zone group coach

    Coach Sally is an assistant coach for our CW National/Zone/Sectional groups that practice at EMU and also helps out as needed with the State II and III groups.  Sally started swimming for a summer club at the age of five and continued swimming through her senior year at Penn State.   She was a three-time NCAA qualifier at Penn State and received an honorable mention as an All American.  She also broke school records in the 500-free and 800- free relay while on the Penn State women’s swim team. Sally was also an Olympic trial qualifier.

      Swimming was a part of Sally’s family growing up in Somerset, New Jersey.  Both of her parents were swim coaches and her mother was a U.S. Olympic swimmer.  Her dad is still a high school coach for a team in New Jersey and her mom, Sue, works at USA Swimming.  "Swimming has been such a huge part of my life since I was born... so to still be involved with it just feels natural."  Sally’s sister, Katie, is a NCAA All-American and Olympic Trial qualifier.

Mike Schmidt

Mike will work with our strength and conditioning programs. Mike has returned to the Ann Arbor area after working for Athlete’s Performance out of Arizona. At Athlete’s Performance Mike worked with professional baseball players designing their personal strength and conditioning programs. Prior to taking his position with AP Mike was a strength and conditioning coach at UM. At UM he worked with Women’s Swimming and Baseball.
 

 

 

 

Mark Hill

State/National/Zone/Sectional Group coach

Mark comes to Ann Arbor from Key Largo, Florida. Mark was the head age group coach at The Race Club in Islamorada, Florida.  Mark worked with U-M Men’s swim coach Mike Bottom, who was at The Race Club before moving to Ann Arbor. Mark also has coached high school swimming and masters swimming. In addition, Mark has been an instructor for the past three years at the Wolverine Swim Camps. In addition to coaching at CW, Mark will also be working with the University of Michigan Men’s Swimming program.

Currently, Mark is the lead coach in the State 3 Group at Canham and is assisting in the Red National Group with our older swimmers.  CW swimmers appreciate Mark’s knack for making swim practices fun and engaging while also having an eagle-eye focus on the important details of swim technique and training.

Tim Haines

Tim comes to AA from Palo Alto, CA. Tim was a senior coach at Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics while being a substitute instructor at Stanford University. Tim has also been a masters coach and assistant coach at Ladera Dolphins. Tim will be attend graduate school at UM.

 

Scott Cameron

Scott was a student assistant coach at Grand Valley State University. He received his Bachelor degree in Movement Science with a Coaching concentration. Scott has worked with the UM swimming camp over the last two summers. Scott will also be working with the UM Men’s Swimming program doing video work.

Ashley Espinoza

Ashley was a swimmer at Oakland University. In 2007-2008 she was given the Academic All-Summit League Achievement Award.  Ashley comes from Dexter, MI where she was a key swimmer on the Dexter High School Women’s Swim and Dive team.

Ryan Piza

Ryan comes to AA from Eden Prairie, Minn.  There he was a member of the national club team Foxjet where he recorded a club record time in the 200-yard fly short course (1:56.68).  Ryan was a swimmer on the University of Michigan.  He is currently enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the U-M.

Noah Whitener

Noah comes from Saline, Michigan.  He was a four-year All-State honoree and named All-American his Junior and Senior years of high school along with being named captain of both swimming and water polo as a senior.  He was a swimmer at the University of Michigan and two year recipient of the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award.  He is currently enrolled in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and is majoring in Pre-Medicine.
