Katy
Aquatics’ group structure is based upon swimmer chronological
age and performance. Coaches are assigned to each age grouping and
are responsible for coaching an entire age group, but swimmers are
grouped according to ability. Each age group has three levels based
upon where a swimmer fits on a performance scale. The performance
scale is determined by each swimmer’s IMX Score, meets for
which the swimmer qualifies, test results and for all swimmers aged
11 & Over, attendance.
* USA Swimming Motivational times are used for
determining the level of meets for which a swimmer is
qualified.

CLARIFICATIONS
BIRTHDAYS:
Swimmers must
swim with their age group. Swimmers age-up only at the beginning of
a session. If your
birthday is before Jan. 1 then you will age up to the next age
group for the Fall season.
AGE-UP TO GROUPS AT THEIR CURRENT
LEVEL:
Swimmers who age
up to the next age group must meet the criteria to be in the levels
within the age group they are moving to. For example, a swimmer who
swam in the Gold level at the younger age group must meet the Gold
standard for the next age group – they should not expect to
automatically swim with the Gold swimmers merely because they were
in the Gold group at the younger age.
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is
part of the criteria for all swimmers aged 11 and over. Attendance
will be taken by the coaches at the beginning of each workout. If
you expect to be marked as being present, please be on time for
your workout. Although it is not a criteria for the 10 & Under
swimmers, coaches will be taking attendance and it may be used for
group placement when a swimmer ages up to the 11-12 age group.
Attendance as a criteria is session-driven. It may be used for
move-up only if a swimmer has been with Katy Aquatics for the
(entire) previous session.
BEGINNING OF SWIMMING
YEAR:
Every August we
will re-calibrate the groups for the upcoming swimming year.
Swimmers will be notified of their group placement by August
31st. We will not move a swimmer ‘down’
within a swimming year (September – August), but we will take
into account the summer performances when setting up the groups for
the upcoming year. Swimmers who expect to be in the higher level
groups should be using the summer season swimming with Katy
Aquatics to their best advantage. Swimmers aged 13 years and over
must have a current IMX score to be placed in Gold. Swimmers aged
12 and younger may use their short course IMX
score.
IMX SCORE:
Using
Hytek’s Single-Year Group Power Points, all USA Swimming
registered athletes earn an IMX Score based upon the cumulative
point total of the combination of IMX events for their age level.
The overall IMX Score as well as the swimmer’s current best
score for each IMX event appears on the athlete’s My USA
Swimming page (on the USA Swimming Website at www.usa-swimming.org ) for each season. As
times in these events improve, the swimmer’s IMX Score is
automatically updated.
In order to
receive an IMX Score, a swimmer must legally swim each IMX event in
their age level in a sanctioned meet during the
season.
AGE GROUPS AND EVENTS:
The following
single age groups and event combinations will be tabulated for both
men and women to determine IMX:
9 & Under; 10
year olds
200 IM, 200 Free,
100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Fly
11 year olds; 12
year olds
200 IM; 400/500
Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Fly
13, 14, 15, 16,
17, and 18 year olds
200 IM, 400 IM,
400/500 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 200 Fly
A swimmer’s
times will count for the entire season – so if a swimmers
ages up during the season the IMX score on the My USA Swimming page
will show a score for his/her lower age group and their new age
group.
For Katy Aquatics
purposes, we will use the IMX score for the swimmer at their
current age.
