Open
Ocean
Swimming
As part of
our swimming program we have instituted open ocean swim workouts at
the Kailua Kona Pier, lead by Head Coach Harry Canales. Open ocean
swimming has become very popular in the islands with numerous races
held year round. These swims build strength and endurance as well
as knowledge of the ocean and it’s vastly beautiful
wildlife.
All of our
coaches are lifeguard certified and are in the ocean with the
swimmers either swimming, on a surf board, or in a kayak.
These
workouts are usually done in the mornings when our swimmers have
vacations from school or in substitution of a swim practice when
the pool is closed. We will notify swimmers when open ocean swims
will be held. These swims are usually
for Spotted and
Racer
Dolphins only.

We also
have occasional "powow" sessions in which we have informal
discussions on diverse topics (ie., nutrition, academics, family,
goal setting, respect for others and community, etc.). We often
stress the importance of education and make sure the children make
it a priority in their daily routines. The "powows" are nomally
held prior to practice and also serve to strengthen and further
develop the bonds/relationships between swimmers themselves, as
well as with their parents, teachers, coaches, and
elders.
Attendance and
Punctuality
In order
for the swimmers to benefit from the continuity of the work outs,
it is essential that they attend practice regularly . As swimmers
get older and stronger they also become more competitive and it is
necessary to train more.
If
the individuals are not attending regularly, they tend to fall
behind their peers and this can be very discouraging for
them. Swimmers will often feel lost as they may miss
drills, exercises or video showings that are being used as
reference or in practice. Encourage your children by bringing
them regularly and on time. Please note also that Coach
Harry and Kathy appreciate your picking up the children on a
timely basis as well. Mahalo for your cooperation!!!
