Swimming Meet Types:
Dual Meets:
The most basic type of
swimming meet is a dual meet. A dual meet is a meet that takes
place between two teams. A dual meet usually consists of 20-30
events, where all ages can compete. Dual meets are small in terms
of the number of swimmers involved. Usually a dual meet will have
between 75 and 150 swimmers competing. The normal time to complete
a dual meet is 2 to 3 hours. These meets are great for new swimmers
and experienced ones as well.
Novelty
Meets : A novelty meet is a just above
a dual meet. It is not as competitive. Swimmers without A times are
strongly encouraged to attend these meets.
Invitational’s: Prelim-Final
Meets: Invitational are much larger than dual meets, there can
beanywhere from 200 to 300 swimmers a day. An invitational usually
lasts an entire weekend. They are divided into 2 sessions and each
session containscertain age groups. The Friday night session is
routinely distance events, which are events over 200 yds/m for 13
and over and 100 yd/m for 12 and under. Friday night sessions are
for more advanced swimmers. Saturday and Sunday contain 2 sessions
each. Each session will have two age groups; each age group will
swim different events each day. Each session will routinely last 3
to 4 hours. These sessions are good for any level of
swimmer.State Championship meets,
Sectionals, Jr. and Sr. Nationals use this format -the
national level allows for 24 swimmers in finals. Swimmers are
informed at the end of the season if they have qualified to take
part in these “Championship Meets”. It is always a good
idea to track your swimmers times so you are aware of the meets
they have qualified for.
