LAC Coach’s Corner
August 2009
By Casey Coble

In August’s Coaches Corner I will review the swim meets from the month of July. First thing I would like to highlight is the LAC team records that were broken in the month of July.
All of the following records were broken at Middle Atlantic Senior Champs
13-14 200 fly – Emily Cameron broke Charlene Miller’s record of 2:26.07 from 1989 with a time of 2:22.38
13-14 200 free – Emily Cameron broke Charlene Miller’s record of 2:10.45 from 1989 with a time of 2:07.90
13-14 200 breast – Emily Cameron broke her own record from March with a new time of 2:36.43
13-14 400 Free – Emily Cameron broke her own record from last summer with a new time of 4:28.13
13-14 200 I.M. – Emily Cameron broke her own record from last summer with a new time of 2:21.38
Open 400 Medley Relay – The relay team of Sarah Ault, Emily Cameron, Katie Collins, and Jane Kuntz broke the record held by Leanne Rowland Kayla, Ricedorf, Ashley Yeager, and Allison Luttermoser of 4:37.36 from 2002 with a time of 4:30.61
Congratulations to all!

Now a quick recap of the July swim meets:
7/11-13: LAC Speedo Classic. Awesome job from everybody who helped! This was one of the smoothest run meets that I have ever been to (outside of a minor printer issue). The swimmers swam awesome and I overheard a lot of positive comments from other coaches and parents.
7/16-19: Middle Atlantic Junior Olympics. LAC was very well represented at Junior Olympics. The highlight of the meet had to be both of the 13-14 girls relays (400 Free/400 Medley) placed 2nd. We had a very large amount of finals swims as well as a boatload of new Zone Cuts
7/22-25: Middle Atlantic Senior Champs. This was the championship meet for our Senior group and many of the Tenacious A swimmers. This is one of the fastest meets on the East Coast. Even though it was our LSC’s championship meet, teams from all over (even Canada) showed up for this meet. Our girls team managed to navigate our way through this competition for a 4th place finish. The men’s team also had a top 10 finish, placing 8th. Combined LAC ended up in 6th place. Also worth mentioning, 14 year old Emily Cameron won both the 200 meter Breaststroke and 200 Individual Medley.
The following swimmers competed:
Kristina Ciatto (4 Personal Bests), Jane Kuntz (4 PBs), Katie Zell (2 PB’s), Sarah Ault (3 PBs), Lindsay Mullican (1 PB), Erin Mullican (2 PBs), Cat Wilson (5 PBs), Erin Kury, Taylor Kile (5 PBs), Christian Lapann-Johannessen (7 PBs), Katie Collins (3 PBs), Alexis Walley (6 PBs), Sami Kegel (1 PB), Jonathon Youssef (2 PBs), Dan Lumas, John Myers (5 PBs), Steve Gallagher (1 PBs), Aaron Eckman (2 PBs), Anna Kelemen (3 PBs), Emily Cameron (5 PBs), Paige Daniel (3 PBs), Lizzie Ebert (2 PBs), and Amber Cortazzo (2 PBs)

Now for the meets coming up in August. LAC will be attending two meets in August, both of which are major Championship meets.
The zone all star championship meet will be held August 12th-15th up at Penn State. We have a whole list of swimmers attending this meet (found on our website) in which will be swimming under the Middle Atlantic All Star Team name. So when searching the results to follow your fellow teammates, it would be easier to look up their name rather than team.
The other meet will be the USA swimming Speedo Junior National Championships. This is a meet for the very fastest 18&under swimmers in the entire Country. The meet will be held Aug. 10-14th in Federal Way, WA (between Seattle and Tacoma). LAC will be represented by 18 year old Dan Lumas and Emily Cameron. Dan will be swimming the 100 breast and Emily will be swimming the 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 I.M., 400 I.M., and 50 free.
Links to the Real-Time results of both of these meets are currently posted at the LAC website.

Open House – Aug. 25th!!! Spread the Word!!!
Open Houses are the way we like to sell our club. The more people we get to our club, the more competition your child will have in practice to help him/her swim faster. Also, the more swimmers, the more friends your child can meet. Competition and Friendship are the two things that really make swimming (and really any sport) as fun as it can be. Any connections you have to summer league swimmers who are not currently participating in club swimming are great ways to add more swimmers to the program.

Review of the suit issue from last month.
I realize this is probably getting more and more confusing by day, and trust me, it is for the coaches as well. It seems they are changing policies on a daily basis. As of today, only textile suits (all fabric, no rubber) will be legal starting Jan. 1st. This means no LZR’s, Blue Seventy’s, Jaked, Arena X-glides, etc…. There will also be a limit to the amount the suit covers. No suits below the knees or past the shoulders will be permitted (I think they also outlawed suits with zippers). We have posted a release from John Leonard, the head of the American Swim Coach’s Association, explaining the reasoning for the banning of certain suits and it is directed towards the swimming parent so Please read it if you have further questions.
