F.A.Q./About Us

Welcome!

Utica Shelby Swim Club’s mission is to provide a positive environment that allows all member athletes to experience their full potential in swimming and in life. An integral part of the community for over 35 years, USSC, a non-for-profit 501-c-3 organization, offers year round competitive training governed by the rules and regulations of Michigan Swimming/USA Swimming.  A dedicated and committed coaching staff provides sound technique instruction and aerobic training that opens opportunities for each swimmer to reach their greatest potential. Our elected Executive Board is a cooperative of seven parent volunteers working with the Head Coach as Aquatic Director to maintain a superior swimming organization with an eye on the future. Supported by our committee chairs and all our families, our club is strong because of our members and their commitment to our swimmers and their sport.

How Is The Club Financed? The club’s income comes from dues paid by the members, fundraisers and USSC Hosted Meets.

What Is My Time Commitment As A Parent?
As a parent, you will be required to work at all USSC Hosted Meets.  This year, 2009-10, during short course season (September through March) USSC is hosting two meets, the Grab Bag Meet in October & the Odd Age Meet in January .
Because USSC Hosted Meets are a source of revenue and many people are needed to run a meet successfully; there is a substantial fine for non-participation.

What Is My Child’s Time Commitment? Your child will be expected to attend a reasonable number of practice sessions as well as participate in League Meets and USSC Hosted Meets.

When Does My Child Practice?  The swimmers are divided into groups according to their age and ability. Practice sessions vary from 30 minutes to two and one half hours and are offered three to six times a week. Younger swimmers will have fewer and shorter practices with more individualized attention. Older swimmers will spend more time in the pool reinforcing the skills they have learned and increasing their endurance. The practice schedule is determined by our Aquatics Director and will be available on the Practice Schedule Overview   Click here for overview.

Where Does My Child Practice? Practice facilities include the pools at Eisenhower HS, Rochester HS, Utica HS and Oakland U.  Once you have received your password and login, a group calendar will be available to you on the locked side of the website.

What Is My Financial Commitment?
Dues are determined on a per session basis, Fall Session (September through December), Winter Session (December through March), Spring Session (April through mid-June), and Summer Session (mid-June through end of July) and by group.  Dues schedule is available at tryouts.  Michigan Swimming dues are $54 per year.

What Are League Meets and Invitational Meets? League Meets (or Mini Meets) are usually held on Friday evenings and are a meet where our younger and newer swimmers compete against other teams in our league. The coach will decide what events your swimmer will be entered in and signing up is easy.  (We sign up on our website on the logged in side)  There is no cost to swim in a mini meet.   Invitational Meets generally last all weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday, however attendance isn’t required at all sessions).  They are hosted by one club and attended by many clubs in the area. Swimmers enter a meet by which sessions they are available to swim. Our coaches usually choose the races a swimmer will compete in.  Swimmers should discuss possible race choices with their coach.  Meet packets are posted on the event page when the event is posted. The cost to enter an Invitational Meet ranges from $3.50 to $5.00 per event plus a $1 per swimmer per meet MI Swim fee.  An entry fee list is also posted on the event page after the coaches have approved all entries.
