The Short Course season typically
runs from September 1 through April 15 each year. Short
Course (yards) meets are held at indoor pools. Each meet session
will last around three to four hours. Plan to arrive at the meet at
least 15 to 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled warm-up time.
Warm-up times and other meet info will be sent by email and posted
on the website.
NSS families are encouraged to sit in the same general area of the
bleachers wearing NSS apparel to show our team spirit!
Each swimmer will need a NSS competition swimsuit, extra
goggles, and at least two NSS swim caps. You should bring
at least 2 to 3 towels, depending on the number of events the
swimmer is swimming. Swimmers will also need healthy snacks
and beverages such as bananas, muffins, and bagels with
peanut butter, fruit, Chex Mix, cheese, Power Bars, Cliff bars, and
other carbohydrates. Salty chips and sweets are not good foods to
have at a meet. Also bring lots of water, sports drinks or
juice. Soft drinks are not a good choice.
You should also bring a NSS sweatshirt, NSS sweatpants, NSS
T-shirts or other articles of clothing to keep the
swimmer’s muscles warm during the meet.
You may also want to bring quiet entertainment.
Items such as a book, deck of cards, I pod, newspaper, something to
occupy your swimmer’s mind (and yours) but will not require a
lot of energy.
It is always a good idea to bring folding, portable chairs
for the entire family. Even if the pool has
bleachers there is often not enough space available on the
bleachers for swimmers and their family to sit comfortably.
Remember to bring money to purchase anything that
you have forgotten and to purchase a heat sheet. Heat
sheets usually cost around $10.
Swimmers will need to develop the habit of "warming
up" and "swimming down" during the meet
between events. These habits will be adjusted, as the athlete gets
older.
A concession stand is usually being operated at
each meet. The concession stand will have water, sports
drinks and certain snacks available but it always a good idea to
bring your own snacks.
The Long Course (50 meter pools) season begins in
mid-April and runs through the beginning of August. Long
course meets are often held outside, so you should be prepared with
sunscreen, and lots of water. It can be very hot!
Several members of the team will also bring an open-air tent to
shield swimmers from the sun.
You may also want to bring highlighters to
highlight your swimmer’s events in the heat sheet. You should
also bring a pen or pencil.
The Coaches suggest our team parents support all NSS children and
have FUN at every meet! Parents should
constantly keep in mind that no matter how great or disappointing
results can be, consistency in reaction to each swim is key to the
swimmer’s long-term success.
